Where's the best place to boost a guitar signal into a pre like a Quad or a Recto? Do you boost the Lead channel by adding more signal level from the guitar or drive a distortion effect like a SD-1 into the Clean channel? ...or a combination?

Currently i'm messing about with a Marshall JMP9001 preamp as a boost source and I'm getting some pretty brutal metal tones sending distortion in to Rhythm-1 of my Quad:- massive Marshall gain into Quad tone. I can also use the Marshall's EQ as pre-pre-eq trim for other Quad channels.
How does it work for you guys?
