Boost pedal question

Can you get power tube distortion out of a high volume amp like a Mesa Lone Star by putting the boost in the effects loop? Would you then be bypassing the preamp tubes ('cos I hate the sound of preamp distortion) and overdriving the power section?

I think that will make the amp louder so why not just turn the master levels up and keep the gains lower to drive the power tubes into saturation? Either way it will most likely be loud. You might consider an attenuator.
