With any luck a new Road King amp should arrive soon. As an exercise in tonal exploration I want to see how close it can get to
classic Marshall tones using its EL34's. I intend to post sound clips for the result. I'll plug both directly into the amp as well as
alternatively use outboard EQ and compression/boost.

Plexi fans, please post some suggestions for recordings that you consider excellent examples of Marshall tone, both in vintage and
more recent contexts in any genre. The solo should be essentially without effects. What do you think of these for starters?

Jimmy Page: Solos from Stairway to Heaven & Live In Peace (with The Firm)
Eric Johnson: Cliffs Of Dover & Solos from Desert Rose

Allman Brother's Live Filmore East

Paul Kossoff cranking out the chord to Free's "Alright Now"

AC /DC

Ritchie Blackmore Deep Purples "Made In Japan" Live.

There are my favorite classic Plexi tone.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just ordered the All Stars' second album as well as "Made In Japan". Funny that Deep Purple escaped me all these years, but as a teenager most of my friends were more into prog and fusion or at least pretty diverse other stuff. (Ordered Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds Of Fire for good measure too)

One of my favorite recorded Plexi Tone Albums of all time is Def Leppard's High 'n' Dry Album. Frickin' awesome guitar sound! We should rename Mutt Lange, "The Marshall Witchdoctor"!

That's probably one of the reasons I'm one of the few individuals who seem to really dig the Stage I Stiletto's. They don't nail the tone perfect, but come the closest out of anything I've yet to try other than the original!

peace,

amen to all!!is that the 51 Phantom CD?? 3 or 4 good ones there...that,Polaris,and Electric Blue Watermelon have their moments, but IMO their originals are weak-LORD HAVE MERCY is killer...def. get the 1st cd "Shake Hands with Shorty" and def. get live at Bonnaroo-killer tone with Dewayne Burnside playing and singing as well(at their very best)-Lord Have Mercy is drippin' with tone-the NMA are better than their studio recordings...a live show in a small club is a mezmerizing  experience

Pretty old school, not sure if it is on CD - Fleetwood Mac "Kiln House" has some classic tones. Of course Hendrix "Band of Gypsys" or "Live in the West". Not David Bowie "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars " though, that is a Fender Deluxe Reverb. Not Derek and the Dominos "Layla" either, that is mostly a couple of Fender Champs. Who'da thunk it? :D
