Hey all ....
I was wondering if it would be better to get a 1x12 speaker cabinet rather than a 2x12 for
a Rectoverb 50 watt head.
I have the 1x12 combo but recently purchased the head as a way to save my back. :)
Now I need to get a speaker cabinet for it.
Seeing as the combo version is only a 1x12 ... would it be overkill to get a 2x12 cabinet for it
that is 120 watts when the head is only 50 watts. Would it make the amp sound weak at all
only pushing the speakers to less than half their capacity?
At 90 watts .... the 1x12 would seem to be the best fit to me, but if the 2x12 would be a bigger beefier
sound....than maybe I'd spend the extra $$$.

Thanks for any help out there.

Rectifier 2x12 is a great cab but they are pricey new. It's a big sounding 2x12 with a lot of 3-d bass qualities. I bought mine when I had the ROV combo. I use it with a Marshall head now around the house.

Used they can be found for around $350-$425. Avatar and Lopoline are well thought of cheaper alternatives.

I'm a firm believer in pairing Rectos with V30's. YMMV.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think it was a stupid question.
I'm obviosly a novice at the technical aspects here ...
Basically my question is would a 50 watt amp lose anything being run through a 120 watt speaker cabinet ?
Is it a matter of the amp only pushing the speakers at about half their capacity or am I totally off base?

Thanks again !!

Hard to find used, but a Roadster 2x12 Cab just kicks arse with a 50wRecto. As for your last question... ultimitely I've always believed the lower wattage speakers sound better, but the big EVs and other examples can blow that theory out the window for sure. I would not worry about the 130w speaker cab match to a 50w Recto. At least not with 2 Vintage 30s. I've also ran 2 / 25w Greenbacks with my 50wRecto and that is the perfect addition to the two V30s. Mine's always sounded great to me. Good luck with your search.

After I sold my ROV I went with a older 2 Ch Dual Rec. It came with a 4x12 Rectifier Slant Cab rated at 240w.
I ran the ROV through that and it sounded great. I even ran the 100w DR with the 2x12 to see what it sounded like and it sounded very similar to the ROV through the 2x12. Even though I sold both the ROV combo and the Dual Rec, You'll notice that I have both cabinets and a 50w Marshall head. I've even pushed both cabs with it and it sounds great.

I'm no technical guru but I'm sure there are guys on here can provide a much better answer, but in theory the lower the wattage on the speaker, the earlier you'll get speaker cone break up. Speaker cone movement and the amount of air you push is an intregal aspect to overdriven tones. The one rule of thumb is that you don't want your amp wattage to exceed that of the cabinet. You woulnd't want to take a 150w Triple Rec and push a 2x12 rated at 150 watts. You could do it but you would be in jeapordy of blowing the speaker if you push the cab too hard. The wattage on the head specifically relates to bass response, when the amp starts to break up, and clean headroom. A Dual Rec is not twice as loud as an an ROV etc...

The ROV combo had a single Black Shadow rated at 90w and was open back. Previous to the ROV I had a 5150II combo loaded with two Sheffields closed back. I felt the ROV lacked depth. Part of that was the fact that it's open back. I liked to overdriven tones on the ROV but the single speaker seemed to be lacking something. My preference is always to be running at least 2 speakers. I feel it adds a 3-d effect to the tone compared to a single speaker. I added the 2x12 and fell in love with the tone. I always ran both the combo speaker and the 2x12. I just prefered it that way.

Just some other food for thought. I prefer speaker cabs to have contact with the floor. I don't like amps sitting on casters. I've also tried Vertical 2x12's and while I prefer them over a single speaker I still prefer a horizontal 2x12.

Last year I bought my brother a Peavey Bravo rated at 20 watts. I've pushed both the 2x12 and the 4x12 )not at the same time though and never with the combo speaker it's just crap)with that amp and it sounds great. Tone is in the ear of the beholder. You may love a 1x12 Rectifer extension cab. My best piece of advice it to take your head and guitar and try some different cabs. See what you think.
