anyone using a BBE Sonic Maximizer with their Triaxis rig? I am running it (the Triaxis) through a 20/20 with the deep mod and that STILL isn't enough low end for me... :(

I think i have been assaulted by the Recto's Tone for so many years I can't shake that sound. Damn. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure that thump is possible with the 20/20. You may have to bite the bullet and go for a 2:Ninety, but at least then you can run 4 4x12 cabs! 8)

20/20 sounds nice. But you can't get that thump you want.
You will need a 2:90 or 2:100.
I am using a triaxis-BBE-2:100.I am very happy with the low end i am getting

Vitor,

I personally don't like the BBE. I recently got one also to try to bring some beef into the 20/20. I feel that unless you turn up the LO contour all the way, it makes no difference at all and when you turn up the LO, it sounds way too boomy. I feel that overall the BBE ruins the sound actually. I'm sending it back. Not my cup of tea.

I'm on a similar quest as you it seems. New 20/20 owner here. Do you have your Orange yet? I still have yet to do the Deep mod, but I'm planning to soon. My 20/20 needs to be retubed first anyway.

There is no question that the 20/20 leaves me feeling short changed in terms of missing that "heavy" feeling. I haven't played in a band situation with it yet, but I'm hoping that I am actually going to appreciate the missing low end in terms of the overall mix anyway. But there is no question that its less enjoyable to stand in front of the amp and play, as before.

In the past I have had a 2-90 instead of the 20/20, with same preamp and that rig was orgasmic. I was so intoxicated by the tone that I would sometimes find myself just standing in the room hitting open G or E chords and listening to the puurrrrfect tone and chunking on it. Got compliments all the time, it was really the perfect sought after chunky rythmn rock sound.

I DEFINITELY do not get that with the 20/20. Sometimes I have to look down to see if I am actually hitting the E string because I can't freakin hear what I am expecting to hear. If I turn up the treble a bit to hear the bite, then I hear it, but its lacking the bass thump for sure.

In the end, the 2-90 was literally injuring my back. At this stage, its me and me only that has to heft my rig into the back trunk of my sedan. That's why 2x12 and that's why 20/20. I'm gonna do the deep mod, get a Mills Acoustics cab probably, and try to see if I can make this rig work because the size/weight is just way more practical. In the band setting it probably sits in a mix better anyway with some of the missing thump. Just not as much fun to stand in front of the amp alone I guess.

I also have to say that I think the 20/20 has a certain british singing quality that the 2-90 didn't have, probably because of the boosted mids. I was never entirely happy with my bluesy lead tones before with the 2-90 while I was orgasmic about my rythmn. The 20/20 on the other hand is giving me inspirational bluesy lead sounds. I find also with the 20/20 I have to be more attentive to not over-driving everything. I have to make sure my guitar volume is not quite full and I'm careful on the gain and such, otherwise my chunks turn into absolute mud, very easily.

But that previous 2-90 setup also had some custom speakers(not mine) that were pretty much filled with pillows to make them sound very tight...which they did, but they also sounded small at times. That could be why they sounded great for rythmn chunk but wimpy for blues leads. In other words, I might not be able to blame the amp. And I can't really remember now whether that setup had a lot of low end or not. One would say no it didn't. They were just "tight". But somehow it seemed like the 2-90 just had more weight behind it, without necessarily being woofy.

In any case, I'm definitely paying attention to your progress and I'm on a similar quest. Wanna make the 20/20 work.

Ok, so I borrowed a BBE 362 from a friend, plugged it in to the 20/20 (after the fx unit) and voila!... low and highs. I would just like to say for the record, I don't think it should be necessary to use E.Q. type things for quality equipment like Mesa makes. This includes stomp boxes in front of the amp to get a "tighter" distortion channel. HOWEVER, after having owned Dual Rectifiers since '96, there is a certain frequency spectrum you don't realize you get used to with those amps at any volume. I don't want a 20/20 to be a Recto, but I really need just a little more out of it and I believe that the BBE gets me half way there.

Dewdman42, it makes sense to me that you tried a BBE and heard no change because you haven't done the deep mod yet. The deep mod removes a high pass filter that "passes" a certain amount of highs and "filters" the lower frequencies. Thats why putting an EQ on your 20/20 makes no difference because you are pushing frequencies before the filter "filters" them out in the power section. You won't hear very much difference until you do the mod. I certainly can hear even subtle changes in the BBE and can get PLENTY of lows out of the power amp (using the BBE).

I wouldn't be going through all this trouble if I didn't think the 20/20 was a solution. I am looking at this as a challenge to try to figure out the correct match of equipment. I have learned, having owned lots of Boogie gear over the years, that you kinda have to solve a little puzzle with some of their products. Some gear will do what you need, and some gear won't do what another product they make does, and I know sometimes you just have to accept that. I am not looking for a Recto substitute, just looking for a unit that will do more (option wise) then my Roadster did with out being a Roadster. I think the BBE will help take the rig halfway, and thats all I was looking for from it in the first place. The Roadster is a perfect amp for me and I'll own one again when I get paid from this up coming tour, but the convenience and portability of the Triaxis with a 20/20 compels me to want to find a way to make this setup work.

As for the Orange, its a custom order... (black is a custom order for them...LOL!) It will probably take another week or so I would imagine. I'll post sexy pictures of the full rig when I get it all together. Good luck Dewdman.

Thanks for the those comments. The mod is forthcoming here for sure. Turns out I can't return the BBE I bought, so I'll hold on to it for a while and try it out with the deep mod and with new tubes as well. I got spoiled on that 2-ninety before, but I feel its close here....and is sounds like you have gotten it so I will keep trying. Thanks for the feedback. By the way, what kind of music you playing Vitor?

I will be really anxious to hear from you after you get your Orange. I am probably gonna throw down for the Mills Acoustics 2x12 before this is over too.

eh, typical metal-rock kinda stuff... just like everyone else does here.

I actually got a terrific job as a guitarist with a well known pop singer recently. He is a good friend of mine and has been for years. He wanted something different for the guitar work then the normal R&B stuff thats out there so thats what Im doing now. Just waiting for him to sign the dotted line on the record deal so I can be an employed full time musician. It'll be fun. I have been doing R&B, Motown, Black-Gospel, fusioney stuff for many years but I SO love the rock and metal stuff.

p.sp, let me know how that cab of yours does when you get it as well. I'll post pics and sound clips of my new rig for sure when I get it all.
