I'm a LONGTIME baseball and played for about 13 or so years, even made it up to the state high school finals in florida in 2003. I have a deep respect for the game and all that.......

What is your opinion of bonds hitting 756? (i just saw it on TV tonight)

Whereas I'm not his biggest fan and I definitely disagree with his use of steroids (if it is indeed true), as a player I respect his intense knowledge of the game, knowledge of the strike zone, and ability to know exactly when to swing at his perfect pitch, but, not only swing, he takes it out 400ft. That takes lots of talent that steroids can't do. The only thing the steroids do is help you get it to 400ft. It doesn't do anything before that.

I still don't like the guy too much, nor do I agree with the roids thing. I hope ARod can break his record soon, especially since he's from my hometown and is a much humbler individual.

a bunch of players have used and couldn't hit for **** ... just look at Neifi Perez who got busted about 15 times ... and by the way, more pitchers have been caught with steroids than hitters so if Bonds used them and was unfair to the game, well the opposing pitcher was too.

I'm 100% against steroids but I just hate seeing everybody playing virgin mary right now. Roger Clemens is suspected of taking steroids yet nobody is proposing to add an asterisk right to his name in the record book.

McGuire never hid the fact that he was taking something to help his back, he was quite open about it the entire time he was with the Cards. What McGuire took was not banned by baseball, it was banned by all other professional sports just not MLB.

until pro sports screens for drug abuse, at the same level as the cycling community does, i will remain very dis-interested in pro sports.

CAN YOU IMAGINE....
seeing Peyton Manning pulled from the field in the fourth quarter while leading the Colts on a potential Super Bowl-winning drive?

that's what they did, basically, during this year's tour de france.
Media was all over it.

there's no glory in doing it on the juice.

you know, you can test the blood, but you can't test for the quality of your conscience

McGuire took creatine supplement which at the time was not banned by MLB, but he also took more than just only creatine supplements .

I will NEVER consider Bonds 756 a legitimate record. Nor do I believe for one second that Pete Rose belongs in the hall of fame

who's Barry Bonds?..... 8)
uh ... James Bond's cousin but Barry is rather #25 not 007. They're both distant cousin U.S. Bonds, you know someone that's a safe investment. :?

Sorry, I found the typo hilarious :p

But, to reply to the topic, I will never respect BB as a pro "Athlete" for his drug use, alone.

I think we need to look at how long these records stood and then all of a sudden, in the late 90's you have 3 people closing in on a single season record and then 3 people blow it away by more thatn 10 home runs in a span of 3 years? If you compare Bonds, Soussa, McGwires hitting records to the current alleged steriod investigation, you'll see a level of consistency not there previously.

A co-worker of mine that actually played pro ball just below the big leagues before being injured, claims that steriods do not improve the batters ability to hit the ball. My argument is that it adds the muscle to put it way out of the park.

"Cheating" is inherent in sports. Everyone is trying to get that edge. From pine tar, to vaseline, to spit balls in base balls, to steriods, HGH athletes have always chased something that will make them better.

The other thing that's tough for me is that Bonds seems like such an a-hole. A famous SI writer charachterized him this way, "...In 10 of the worse interviews I've ever conducted, Barry Bonds was 1-7." But Johhny Bench was an ahole and so was Ty Cobb.

That SI writer had it in for Barry from the get go.

Some background of Barry and his abrasive attitude.

His dad Bobby Bonds was hounded all over the place by the press for his womanizing and alcoholism. Young Barry had to absorb this. Sure his dad brought this among them but could you understand Barry's dislike for the press as he grew older? He probably thinks the same thing, all reporters are a**holes too.

clutch71, I'm sure glad you included Sammy Sosa, Mark McGuire in steroid use than only singling out Barry. Many people don't do this. they just ride the band wagon and make Bond's steroid whipping boy and the best target. Its rarely mentioned that Roger Clemens as a target when there's allegation he may have been using steroid.

If you do statistic of ball players for A, AA, AAA that used steroids, there's just as many pitchers and hitters that uses that stuff.

And you did add Ty Cobb and Johnny Bench as a**-holes too.

By Today's standard Ty Cobb would be one the most controversial baseball stars around with his bigot attitude and a lot what he has said and what he implied in the past, the press would have too much material.

I have good memories of going to the local college baseball games with my Dad when I was a kid. I played baseball til I went into jr. high school.

I've never really had any interest in it beyond that. Its too boring for me to watch on TV versus NFL football, which I would rather watch on TV. Almost all college sports are more fun in person though.

But I went to a minor league game the other night and REALLY enjoyed it (beer helps) and will probably go back. Highly recommended.

Except for hard core fans, right or wrong, I expect most of us don't consider this to be a record that counts. Sadly, but hopefully, it will be forgotten.

Sorry about that. I meant PEte Rose not Johnny Bench. Pete Rose was an a-hole to fans. Even Kids.
Gee, I was wondering why you put Johnny Bench Ty Cobb and Bonds in this category. Glad you corrected yourself.

Yes, Pete Rose was one ...

What kills me is how everyone says the record should have an asterix blah blah, I don't like him for his drug abuse roids this roids that.

Has it been proven? Has he been found guilty? No. It's that simple. Until he has been found guilty of using steroids or tested positive there is nothing anyone can really do about it. Remember the one of the sayings in the justice system...INNOCENT until PROVEN guilty?

Also, someone above made a good point. Steroids or not you still have to hit the ball well to hit that many. Steroids certainly cannot help you out there. That's talent, not juice. Being a has-been baseball player myself I know that if you make solid contact on a 90 mph fast ball it's not all that hard to hit it 375-400 ft.

"Steroids or not you still have to hit the ball well to hit that many."

True but it would enhance bat speed and power to hit the ball farther. Especially at an age where most people start to decline not improve. He has not been "convicted" but these factors leave a rational and reasonable person to suggest that something is not right.

Was Ben Johnson fast, absolutely. Steriods just made him that much faster.

OJ and Michael Jackson weren't convicted either.
