Ask me how I know what a blown up capacitor smells like!

I beefed up the power supply in one of my custom amps this morning. The guy said it broke up too early.

Well....right out of the box, a brand new Mesa branded BMI 220 micro farad capacitor blew the hell up!
 I evacuated the house and turned on all of the fans! That **** smells horrible!

Like a pot of month old beans left on the counter horrible!

You just described my wife's cooking.

OK that's not true at all. She's got a meatloaf that's just about ready to come out of the oven as I type. My house smells awesome right now.

Are you saying that the capacitor was defective? How often can that happen?

Be careful down there Monsta!

   I do most of the cooking in my house!

This is the 1st time I've ever seen one blow like that. It just started smoking and did not stop for a good 10 minutes!
I installed a cathode capacitor backwards one time and it blew up like it was full of confetti, but this one just smoked and oozed this tan colored goo that got everywhere!

 I did that with a few resistors and diodes on purpose to see how much current they could handle. They really stink too, but not like this!

We live in a 100 year old house. It's all wood, wood siding, paneling, everything.
1st thing I did was install smoke detectors with a battery backup. They are all inter connected.
There is one in the work shop. I don't know if I got the fans on in time to blow the smoke out or if that sucker is just not working. I think I'll test it today!

That poor amp stinks like a rotten fridge. It's a good place for a "Stick-Up."

We'd like to see pictures.

Its an omen since you and wifey are moving from the South West to the North Pacific.

Speaking of which....you do know it rains up there A LOT, don't you?
Not gonna remind you of New Mexico, for sure.
I have been spoiled by Calif weather...I only go back to the Midwest to visit family. Good luck with that. Maybe the higher humidity will help mask the burnt cap smell...

 Well, it depends on what you call "Alot!"

We spent 4 years in the Hawaiian rainforest. I don't think that 80 inches or so a year will even phase us. The last year we lived on Maui, we had 384 inches of rain.

 It's the cold I'll have to get used to!

Yeah, Monsta...those caps do get a bit skanky smelling don't they!!!!
We blew more than a few up at my old job over the years doing UL testing and you just never get used to it. It takes a while, but it will dissipate. Geeezz...I'm having a flashback right now just thinkin about it  ...those things really are rank!!!
