I haven't had much experience with compressors, except using a little with some clean sounds. But sometimes I read about people who find the right compressor and leave it on all the time, even for high gain sounds. Any of you like that? What are you using and how do you use it?

Clean sounds only for me, if at all. I find compressors to stifle a tube amps gain.

I use a Mark Humphrey Audio modded CS3 for some clean stuff here and there but mainly it really helps (when used correctly) on long sustained lead passages. It's sets up can't be any more basic and is way easy to find the sweet sopt.

I tried an MXR Dynacomp a few times with my Mark V..it just wasnt adding anything I couldnt get straight in with the right settings. I find the Mark has a lot of sweet compression built right in.

I use a Boss comp. For some chord work to get an even sound, when strumming. For lead I use it for sustain on longer lines. It also works well as a boost. Just turn down the sustain and up the level so you don't squash the sound. when you use it that way it keeps everything clean and gives chan.2&3 a tighter grain. using a comp. takes a little skill but don't dismiss it because it is a great tool. I don't use it all the time either. if you want to use it all the time check out Andy Timmons set up at the Mesa site. I think he uses a Carl Martin unit.

I have one of the BYOC Ross compressors, the five knob one. I do like it with solos, but it can even out rhythm passages too.

it is capable of transparent clean compression to super squashed overly compressed sounds. I like it and it's one of the few pedals i use now.

I bought an MXR Dynacomp and like an earlier poster, I could'nt get it dialed in properly so it sits by itself off the pedal board.

I have an old Boss CS-2 I keep on ALL the time at the end of my front signal chain. It smooths everything out and keeps everything consistantly even. Subtle pick attack changes are not defeated either.

I also tried my friends Keeley comp, and I was impressed. Wish I had the $$ for one of them!

I use a compressor (Retro-Sonic clone of a DynaComp) for lead work. I like it because I can add sustain without stacking more dirt on top of what's already there.
