I was wondering if anyone has tried the JJ **EDIT:KT66/88** Integrated Sextet in a Triple Recto? Sounds pretty flippin amazing to me, if what is in the description really does come out in the amp. I just wanted to see if someone has tried it and liked it. It's about 100 bucks more than the EL's or the 6L6's, but if it's worth a little better/different sound, I don't have a problem shelling it out for my tone. Especially if it'll make it even more brutal.

Interesting idea! I see some potential problems:

1) kt88 is basically similar in B+ current draw to a 6550, which is a lot more than el34, also much higher 6.3v heater current draw than el34, kt66 has higher 6.3v heater current draw than 6l6gc, all of this increased current draw comes out of the same main power tranny, it might overheat and die a stinky, smoky death. Spendy part to replace...

2) Some of the amp's power section resistors might overheat and die from having to handle more current demand. The amp chassis would become much hotter from convection currents originating from the power tubes unless there was a fan running over them. All that hot air has to go somewhere...

Would you feel comfortable locating those resistors, taking them out without ruining the circuit board traces and replace them with 100% confidence that the repair would work? Do you have enough extra cash to pay for shipping and have Mesa fix the possibly VERY expensive damage to your amp?

I would not perform this experiment. Peace.
