what else should I get to help my recording? Im micin my mesa with a dynamic mic, but what other equipment would be useful? Compressor maybe? mic preamp?

you shouldn't need a compressor for guitar recording IMO. you should be able to achieve the tone you're looking for through mic placement and maybe a little eq'ing.

what dynamic mic are you using? sometimes using more than one mic can give you a fuller tone, either using different types of microphones or by placing them differently (on the cone/voice coil, off axis, mic'ing the back of an open back cab, etc)

and how are you recording, with your computer?

Im glad someone brought this topic up.

Is an SM57 enough for recording heavy distorted guitars (modern rock - nice thick recto tone)? Should I be using another mic?

A 57 is all I use, and I love the results.

SM57's are pretty sensitive to placement and models of speakers. Move it around a little until you find the sound that you like.

The more mics you use the more tone options you are going to have. I usually like to do this.

1 or 2 sm57s on the speaker
1 condenser on a speaker or 2-3 feet in front to catch alittle room and gel the sound together and blend to taste. It makes a big difference when you use the right mics together.
