I just read in the latest GP mag that Alex Lifeson is using a Marshall silver jubilee for dirty and Mark V for cleans (yes, the cleans on the V are awesome). He's using H&K and some other head as well and a mesa hi gain amp switcher.

check it out, that dude has sick sounds...

yes it is true and he was giving hi praise to the V for the cleans and was claiming that he knows it's a great overall amp and looking forward to spending some time delving deeper into the amp and additional channels.

When you've got Lamb of God, one of Alanis Morrisette's axemen, Dream Theater, Alex Lifeson and Walter Trout playing 'em along with one in the current Slash band lineup, plus the various styles that the boys and girls of this forum play: you've got to say "damn thats a versatile mofo of an amp"...

i had one for a couple months, it was good (esp. clean channel) but too tight and not close enough to a marshall sound (obviously as Lifeson demonstrates). decent amp though, yes.

I'm a fan of hi gain Mark I mode for my more Marshally-end-of-the-spectrum tones, But yeah its not really "that" sound...
But in most instances, I prefer Boogie tones anyways. If I ever weary of the situation, I'll get a Marshall in to compliment the Mark V, but never to replace it. :)

Myles Kennedy has been a Mesa player for years (IIC+, MKIV, MKV) and chose to bring his MKV on tour with Slash.

Mark Morton made a video with Mesa oddly enough saying in a round about way he wasn't that fond of the Mark V. It was too barky. Word on the street is he went back to his Mark 4. He's also now endorsing the royal Atlantic

Agree. If I want a Marshall tone I will go get a Marshall. A Mesa is a Mesa and that is what I like about it.

I'd heard this.

But Willy still plays his though, right?

Amen to that...! :D

Great article! I was happy to see Alex was fond of the V. Hopefully he will dive into it and discover all it has to offer. I named my Son after Lifeson! Always wondered how he never got into them especially since he's been into the high gain H&K stuff.

As for the Marshall thing I would say the crunch mode gets as close as that amp will get. Turn the gain all the way up. Its still Boogie but with a new twist. I use that channel a lot.

Check this out all the pics of his new rig on Premierguitar magazine page

I surprised Lifeson hasn't waded into the Mesa pool sooner. With all it's bells and whistles, the Road King seems like it would be right up his alley.
