Note that Al DiMeola is using a "Mesa Boogie specially modified Lone Star 100". Interesting:

-Anybody know what the special modficiation is? Could it be the Reeder mod :) ?
-Despite having the money for likely pretty much anything (well, maybe not for a Two-Rock :)) DiMeola chose a Lone Star for "fundemental lows, mids and overall dimensional sound".
-Brauer A/Bs the ODS drive against the Lone Star drive; the LSC holds up well.
-Cool technique Brauer shows for driving the Mesa cabinet speakers into the open back of the Fuchs cabinet

Hard to hear some of what Brauer says thanks to some dude (or chick) hammering on the keyboards in the background :)

that cabinet set up has got to be a pain to set up every night. I'd suspect it has to be "adjusted" for each venue to prevent phase cancellations and the like.

Heh... and not even a great cabinet setup can change the fact that Al Di Meola is an ***.

haha... yeah he's a little pompous but there's some great interviews with him where he shares some neat little id bits. he's also a pretty incredible player ( at least i think he is). although i will say he's got a pretty sloppy right hand, at least live he does.

His right hand defies what a lot of people consider good technique, but at the same time he's an example that what people consider good right hand technique may not be correct. There's other examples of people with totally weird right hand technique who are also really good too, like Marty Friedman. Hell, even Shawn Lane's right hand is all over the place and he was up there as one of the fastest guitarists of all time.

I don't really think Al does much that's very interesting though. I think most of the cred for his style of playing should go to John McLaughlin, which doesn't leave a whole lot for Al. But I agree with the other poster in that I'd probably consider him a much better player if he wasn't such an arrogant ***. ;p

i wasnt really comenting on his technique as much as i've heard him play sloppy as hell in some of his live clips. i love his sense of time and how he kind of dances around standard times and standard rhythms. i'll see if i can dig up a clip that examplifies his sloppiness.

I would have to disagree with the statement that Shawn Lane's right hand is all over the place. Shawn Lane had the most efficient picking technique I've ever seen. His picking was unique with regard to the fact that he honed his picking technique to serve the needs demanded by his imagination; but it is the antithesis of sloppy. Also while Shawn was incredibly fast and accurate it's a diservice to him and his genius to categorize him as merely another fast player.

That was an interesting video. I think you folks that think al di meola has sloppy right hand technique are just completely high. I've seen al several times live, and have always been impressed with his precision and willingness to improv with enthusiasm. I've learned a lot from listening to his approach to using his right hand to augment his sense of rhythm.

+1....it's called ENVY

During the demo he was using Ch2, so maybe it is a Reedered Lone Star. Cool idea, though, about driving the open back cab with the Boogie.
