can anyone tell me what the A/B switch does on a .50cal? should I be able to hear a difference in tone in the A ,B or off position?

This used to be called a "polarity switch" back in the day. Today it is commonly referred to as a "death cap". Keep the switch in the middle position. Using the other settings connects a capacitor from one side of the AC to the chassis. If the cap fails while connected, you can be shocked through your guitar or by touching any grounded part of the amp.
