Has anyone checked this out before, or even heard of it... I randomly found it...

Champ 1015 Watt 4 tube amp, using tubes (813) meant for Radio Stations as I understand. Originally was gonna use KT88's, but would have needed 20 of them vs 4 813's. Biggest power supply I've ever seen on a Amp...

Crazy...

Not so strange to me...... :|

Linear amplifiers used for commercial and amateur radio have been designed and built using these tubes (or 811 or 572...) for a long time. Due to size and weight constraints, the power supply was usually kept separate (...gotta keep 'em separated.... )
Although now we have solid state linear's available, many tube models are still available as they are cost effective for high power.

This amp looks a bit like what was actually used as an audio PA system amplifier for an aircraft carrier.
Yep, back in the '40's they needed very high power levels to be heard (you think your amp is loud? A jet engine will drown it out in a heartbeat!) and tubes was the only way to go!
Can't help but wonder if this thing originally came off a ship somewhere.......? Lotsa rust on that chassis; salt water exposure?

Really nothing new here....

True, but still fun to see someone building one these days...

That's the first time I've ever thought of a KT88 as a *small* tube :).
