I currently use a BadCat 2-Tone overdrive/preamp pedal (think V-Twin, but with a different voicing, in the vein of Vox/Matchless/Bad Cat) as my main tone generator (into a Rocktron Velocity 300 power amp, for the moment). I'm looking to get a tube poweramp and while the Fryette 2:90:2 is my main objective, I'm also pondering the option of a mesa 2:90, but I see it's mostly used with the Triaxis, in all sorts of midi configurations. How will I be able to use the modern and deep functions since my rig will not be midi controlled?

Thanks!

The Deep, Modern, and Half functions are not MIDI. They all operate on a 1/4 inch jack that when open turns the function off and when closed turns it on. If your preamp has the ability to do external switching you should be fine.

Peace,
Joshua

Thanks!

What do people that don't use the 2:90 integrated with a Triaxis use to switch on/off these functions, especially live? Are there any dedicated 3 button footswitches, or something like that?

You could use any latching style footswitch (not the momentary switch type) with 2 buttons (or 3 if you want to switch the half-drive mode too), The only thing you'd have to modify is the end plug, you'd have to cut off the plug and solder on 2 (or 3) separate 1/4" plugs. Really not a big deal to do at all.

To answer your other question, most people don't bother switching the modes if they aren't using the Triaxis. They usually just choose the mode they like the most and adjust their tones to suit.
