I'm getting tired of lugging my Recto 4 x 12 cab when it's not really needed. Can I use a 1 x 12 cab with my 3 ch DR? If so, what would be a reasonably priced one? Orange 1 x 12 cab? Are there any pitfalls in using a 1 x 12 cab with my DR? I guess I could blow the cab up. Would this rig sound any good for lower volume jams? I'm no expert in impedence and all that stuff.

Funny you should ask this!

Just last night I completed a 1x12 cabinet that I'm using with my Rectoverb because I'm tired of lugging around heavy cabinets just to play in someone's basement.

The results were quite good. The cabinet is very small but I ported it. I put a Celestion V30 in it. I also have a dome tweeter in place but I've decided not to use it as the cabinet is plenty bright.

Bass response is much better than expected (probably due to the porting), other frequencies seem fine when compared to a Mesa 2x12 Recto cabinet and it gets VERY loud. In all I'm really pleased.

I'm sure some of the guys that are really into 'tone' here would find fault with it but for me it's going to be a real backsaver.

My son has a Dual Rectifier and I'm sure this cabinet would sound fine with it also - you just need to have enough sense to not 'unleash the fury' and blow the speaker. If you need more headroom then perhaps a higher wattage speaker can be used but I like the sound of the V30 and I have self-control.

Total cost was $200.

I can post pictures and dimensions if you're interested.

Hmmm.
I'd pull two power tubes X _ _ X or _ X X _ , one rectifier tube, and run the Dual at 50 watts with the v30 for a 1 x 12 setup. Getting a 16 ohm v30 will also help out a lot.

I don't have any ideas for cab dimensions. I mean it would be nice if the cab would fit proportionately under the head, right? Someone has to have some plans somewhere.

I have a 2 x 12 version of the EV Thiele cab but I haven't put EV speakers in it. I'm tempted to try them at some point but our finances are retarded tight right now =-(

Thanks a lot, sure, the info would be great to have and pics to see.

I never thought about building one but I'm good with my hands so I'm sure I could handle a 1 x 12. Any links to plans, construction methods or pics greatly appreciated. I would have to price it all up and compare to one in a shop as I am in Australia and prices here can get really weird, you can't predict what will be outrageously expensive here.

By all counts, I really have to try some EVs for this thing at some point.

The Black cab is a modification of the Thiele 1 x 12 design. The other one is based off of a Mills Acoustic Mach212B.

Thanks a heap for all the info. Time to start really looking into this. If I can get a decent tone for practice from a 1 x 12 and it will work technically with my DR head, I'll give one a go.

Found the EVM15L here. Seems like they come in 200W and 400W. I guess I would go for the 200W. This site has a good used 200W one for $250 and new 400W ones for $300. Should I go 200W or 400W and are these prices about right?

I thought I might get away with less $ for the speaker, but I've looked around and this speaker gets a lot of good comments when used in a 1 x 12.

What about the Marshall Haze MHZ112 or an Orange PPC112 to make it quick and easy? Wouldn't sound as good as the EVM15L I am pretty sure. I wonder if they would sound any good or just a waste of money? I might have to get to my local shop and give em a try.

Mesa makes Thiele cabs. I wonder if you could order one with an EV12L in it? You can phone and ask them. Alternatively, you can order one that is unloaded too.

Thanks again. Anyting Mesa is very expensive in Australia. I was lucky to pick a good used rig up, it was still expensive.

Don't worry too much about the power rating - a C90 will be fine, that's what Mesa use in a lot of their 1x12" 100W combos anyway. The reason is that unless you're cranking the amp really fully, it isn't putting out 100W - if you have a completely clean sound on channel 1, the *peak* power isn't over 100W (or it will clip) so the average is more likely around 50W. Unless the dirty channels are set a lot louder, they won't be putting out much more power, if at all.

Secondly a Dual Rectifier is only 100W in Bold and Silicon Diode mode. In Bold and Vacuum Tube, it's about 80W, in Spongy and Diode it's about 70W, and in Spongy and Tube only about 60W. (Those aren't exact figures, but in the right ballpark - I did measure it once but I forgot the actual numbers.) That's even with all four tubes in, or it set to "100W" on the new model. With only two tubes you will only get half of those figures.

I would be careful with a single V30 in full power though, that's getting a bit risky.

Hi,

the actual mesa thiele with Celection C90 sounds really good too!!! But same same here in germany they are very expensive.

I own a thile with the new ev12l and a self build one with the eminence delta 12 pro. the eminence is a real beast, it can handle 800W(!) impulses and has a power of 400W rms!!!

It sounds great but you have to drive it very loud. the eminence thiele was my first 1x12, back in the days I had a stereo poweramp so i connected one of my two marshall 4x12 to one side of the poweramp and the 1x12 to the other side. Belive me or not, the usable sound(! not only pressure) of my 1x12 was so enormous that I wasn't even sure that my 4x12 was connected to the amp - I was really amazed. Some days later I sold both Marshall 4x12es... and bougth a second thiele - now my setup is a little hand-held wrecking ball!
Comparing the ev and the eminence the ev has less bass but more mids....both sound good to me and fit very well together...

Now you've got me curious. I wonder what my thiele 2 x 12 would sound like with EVs? Something tells me it would be an absolute monster / beast! Do you like the Delta 12 Pro? Boogafunk told me it wasn't as good as the EV. We chatted for like 2 hours about speakers and he told me that the EVs were the way to go, hands down. He said it isn't worth putting anything else in a thiele.

I like the Mesa 3/4 back 1-12. Nice big open cabinet that does not have any directional beaming, light on the back and plently loud for giging. It is the biggest 1-12 they make, but small enough to use as a bedroom / practice amp. You can find them in good condition used for about $250.

Thanks for the tips. A 1 x 12 with my beast of a head. Don't know why I didn't think of it earlier.
