I've used the ATA Road Cases for my DR & 1x12 cab (2 separate fittings). They do the job, but it's not hard to build one yourself as you noted assuming you enjoy such crafts (I do, which is why I don't use 3rd party road cases anymore).

Front is typical, as many have previously noted. However, like Steve Vai and others have stated before, it depends on the sound you're looking for / the sound you like...and your loop itself.

To answer your question, in the past I've used the following in terms of FX units: (a) various Lexicon reverb and chorus racks, (b) TC Electronic G System. I liked the G System, but sold it because it was more than I wanted. The Nova would be a fine choice as well. I do like the Axe FX XL...

I highly recommend the Ditto as well because (a) ultra compact and (b) super easy to use. In the past, I've had a Boss RC-3 Loop pedal and found the interface cumbersome. The Ditto is very clean and simple in its design. Plus, it's good enough for Paul Gilbert :) Another way to do it is if...

I did a lot of research into this some time ago. Ultimately went with the Maxon but had it modded by Analog Man. I highly recommend that if you are willing to pay a bit more for it. Very versatile.
