    Finding "that" Mesa sound: How do Mesa amps feel in general? (compared to an 800?)

    My original amp I have had since the mid 70's is a 1971 50 watt JMP Marshall. I mostly play it with humbucker Gibsons with Dimarzio's direct, or thru a Tubescreamer or other booster pedal for guitars with lower output pickups. Here is a list of my current amps: - 1971 Marshall JMP 50 - Mesa...

    Sunshine of your Love. Eq help

    Sunshine of Your Love was recorded in the era when Clapton actually had a decent tone, which is before he switched to a strat. His tone disappeared once he went Fender. He generally either rolled off the highs with the tone knob on his SG (with humbuckers) or switched on his wah wah pedal with...

    Single rectifiers, why no rectifier tube???

    Um, this was a necro thread, last post was 14 years ago. Why did you feel you needed to respond after 14 years? It was very well-explained by several posters 14 years ago, and you are totally misinformed. ALL tube amps have rectifiers (in the B+ supply) Most amps since the 60's have solid...

    Mesa Boogie Mark V sounds fizzy in Channel 2 Crunch, Channel 3 IIC+ and Mark IV mode

    I have a Mark V 90, a JP2C, a Mark IV, (and a Diezel VH4 and Marshall plexi) I have 25 guitars. I find it much harder to get a full gainy sound with any of my strats with any of these amps, and there are big differences between them, much more than any of my humbucker guitars. I have found...

    Mesa Mark Series Comparisons! C++, 3's, 4's, V's & More!

    Great work! Thanks for putting this together. Question, notice in other threads that you said your JP-2C is often your "go to" amp, but you didn't do a shootout with it. Are you planning to do one?

    Wanted STOLEN/ $3000 REWARD Mesa Boogie Mark III Hardwood 3 piece "Stack" Guitar Amplifier

    And a bump reminder: - NEVER, EVER ship valuable stuff like this via USPS! - NEVER, EVER ship valuable stuff like this to an apartment! Hopefully the OP has learned the hard way that using the proper shipping process is paramount. For all others reading this, learn from his mistakes so you...

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    Henz, yes, as long as there is no leakage at voltage, they are fine. ESR is only a factor for the electrolytic filter caps. I don't know what to make of your incident with the canned air. The only thing I can think of is that the "canned air" also contained some flammable gas of some sort...

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    I posted an explanation earlier, but don't think you are yet grasping some of the basic principles of electronics. Let's start with ESR. You don't seem to understand that it is a quality that is only really associated with large electrolytic capacitors, it never is associated with orange...

    $ 4000 C+ on E-Bay

    There is no polarity on those caps. Doesn’t matter which way you install them. I worked for a capacitor manufacture. Sprague would not have bothered to specifically mark one side consistently. Don’t believe this “polarity matters” BS you read here or Youtube videos.

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    Show a photo of your cheap meter reading a 10pf cap. Evidence trumps BS.

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    Nonsense. Almost all cheap meters cannot accurately measure a 10 pf cap.

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    You can’t read low pf caps with a cheap meter.

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    Yes, if they are really bad, an ordinary DMM can easily find them. However, there are many situations where leaky doesn't mean low resistance, especially using lower voltages. Your cheap tester won't help you find those. The methods I talked about will.

    Mark III blue stripe redplating, quick diagnosis and repair

    FYI: - ESR is not something you test for on bypass and coupling capacitors (film capacitors like orange drops and ceramic capacitors) - Most of those cheapie test meters are not very good for testing ESR anyway - ESR is only tested on electrolytic filter caps, because an electrolytic cap can...

    Mark IIB to IIC+ Conversion

    I have designed PCB's dating back to the early 80's, but also repaired boards in the early 80's that were made in the 60's and 70's. ( I own a small company now and do my own boards for my designs) It is SO easy now to design boards and have quick prototypes made within a few days, and...
