Mark series amps lead tone comparisons criticism: can we really?

I am afraid this can be a rabbit hole with no end. I currently have a 50 caliber plus combo and a mark v 35 head and wide body 1x12. Here are my thoughts. 1. If the 50 caliber plus (on lead channel) is on about 1-2 on master volume and the lead master is at 2-3 it is a snarling midrange harsh...

I did the loop test on this particular one and it is not a 2c+, I guess a 2c transition? Turning the gain on the lead channel did affect the sound.

I have an update on my adventure. After all the craziness I have purchased a mark v 35 head. I tried the first version of the mark v 90 watt years ago and later the JPC and I did not like them that much. Fast forward and I tried the JPC and mark v 35 and loved both. They did not have the cab I...

It would appear so...I don't need to metal so much but I do need the gain. My caliber has plenty of gain but it is just so hateful in the snarl regions. I used your video to learn about the loop test so thank you! Each day I am becoming more offset with this whole thing...I went by GC...

NEW INTEL! So I took my 50 caliber plus to the shop that has the 2c+ because they have an amp guy and I wanted him to look at the caliber. The reverb does not work(and it is not the tube) and the 6l6 tube sockets are loose (and it is not the tubes themselves) I knew I was going so I took the...

(OP here) This is all interesting and thank you very much for your replies everyone... I am starting to think I am the only person in the universe that desires the kind of sound I want! I am not looking for a scooped metal tone. I guess the mark series is so popular, and good, at getting that...

More Mark 2c+ vs Mark III vs 50 Caliber+ questions/commentary

I have been looking around a bit. Most guys want the scooped metal type tones and while I don't hate that, I am trying to go for higher gain fusion ala Allan Holdsworth, Al Dimeola certain periods. I have played through every Boogie at some since for years I worked in a store where we carried...

More Mark 2c+ vs Mark III vs 50 Caliber+ questions/commentary

My old green stripe was definitely a killer amp by all accounts, just maybe not as smooth on the top, which sounds like some cap mods would do a lot. The green was simulclass and I ran el34s in the 25 watt mode from time to time. The 2c+ that I played the other day was a 100 watt non-eq. The...

I guess you guys didn't make it the bitter end haha... I can distill it a bit for you if you care to reply. If you mod a mark iii (I have heard the c30 lingo around here) can you get the buttery smooth high end of the 2c+ ? I know there is a transformer thing happening, board difference etc...

Sorry about the length! I have good coffee! Hi, I just jumped into the forum after being away from it for many years so I hope these questions are not beaten to death too badly...(I did do some searching btw) I had a Mark III green stripe a good many years ago, when I used to be on here, and I...

    Mark IV disappointing gain

I am a recent mark iv owner and also new to the board! My iv is later also. I am not dissapointed in the gain. I think the settings are everything in that department. If I were to take a guess I would say you have a tube issue/s. A lot of guys don't like R2 on the mark iv. I am not one of those...

    Mark IV Stuff

Interesting things to be had with this amp... is it smoother with lead gain lower than lead drive? ex: 8 and 8 sounds good, a lot of guys seem to use that, (I have been around that setting plenty) but 6 and 10 pretty much the same amount of gain but maybe smoother..? I might be playing tricks...
