In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

I should get some new tubes and try them on the unit. As for now it seems that my L2 is not sounding as it should. I believe JJ are well regarded as an option for the quad so I'll have to get me a set of those. Should I buy them as a set so the store can give me a properly matched set? or is it...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

Yes I tried the pull deep and the outputs and each of them exclusive to its own output (A-Lead1 / B-Lead2) There is a post here (but I don't remember right now where it is) where somebody posted a section of the output schematic and it shows the pull deep for each channel going to its output and...

    Mesa 20/20 Deep Mod

Finally installed a switch to have the option of using 10uf, 22uf and no cap. I found that there is no difference between the 10uf and the 22uf. However they do add gain to the power and I agree with Francm in that it shouldn't be a problem in practical real life setup, just set up the amp's...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

So I had some time to play around with my newly acquired gear (which left my GAS fund unavailable for a while  ) I have to say that yes, the tubes in these units makes a lot of difference. My fisrt impression of the Quad was that it is much more nicer sounding that the Studio pre and...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

Thanks for your comments, that was my thinking too about the settings and the channels. Unfortunately, the seller is quite far so it's not really a possibility for me to come by and try it. According to the seller all pots and jacks are working, it's just that knob that is missing. So I think...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

Thanks once more for your replies. Dbone, Absolutely understand your statements and opinions. I'm not into getting a bigger rack, 2 Studio Pre (or Quad for that matter) would be just too much space and weight. Yesterday I got a nice clean sound along with a singing lead from the studio. I...

    Vintage style knob replacement

Hi all, Does anybody know where I can get knob replacements for a Studio Pre? I got pricing from the local dealer at $20 per knob. It seems outrageous for a plastic knob, any other knobs are at most $5. Perhaps it's a good idea to just get the modern knobs like the ones on the MKV?

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

So got the pics and details of the Quad. Non midi version with the FU-2 footswitch included, missing a knob and the eq face has some silly scratches. So not really mint. The footswitch looks heavily used too. $600+ship is a good deal? Also, I look into dbone's postings about the quad and found...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

JMMP, Thanks for the advice. I was just thinking that about the shared controls on the MKIII, and since I already have the 50/50 perhaps it makes more sense to try the Quad as opposed to a head, just like you mentioned in your earlier post. Good thing about the one I found is that it comes with...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

JMMP, Thanks for the comments. Indeed the quad takes a lot of real estate on the rack, which I was trying to keep small and light. Though between carrying a 6 space rack with the 50/50+quad+fx would be pretty much the same as carrying a MKV head. If I got the MKIII I would sell the Studio Pre...

In search for good tone-high gain: studio pre or other?

So I am probably asking one question that has been asked before but the thing is that I just recently acquired a Studio pre and although it sounds very nice, the fact that I can't have a nice singing lead at the same time as a nice clean is a bit annoying. I've followed suggestions about how to...

    Rack Ears for Studio Pre

That would be tremendously helpful :D

    Rack Ears for Studio Pre

Looking for rack ears too, Customer service at Boogie don't have them anymore. Although a rack shelf is a good solution I'd like o make the rack ears to properly mount the pre. Does any Studio Pre user want to contribute and share with us the dimensions of the rack ears?

Studio Pre - Metal tones? How metal? In need of advice.

Oliver, thanks for your comments. I recently picked up a 50/50 and after playing around for a couple of days I finally got to dial a nice tone. I go about the same on the eq controls specially on the bass (as per suggested by some members here) Indeed the Studio Pre has a lot of gain available...

    Mesa loudness: 50/50 vs 20/20

Thanks for the reply, I'm going to get new tubes in any case, and since I'm new with mesa gear (except for the 2:90 which never got new tubes from me :? ) What tube brand do Mesa lovers recommend for this power amp? I'm looking to get nice clean loud power with good low end definition as I...

    Mesa loudness: 50/50 vs 20/20

This may be a silly question though being newbbie with these 2 power amps I thought I might ask. I've owned a 2:90 years ago and I was looking into something smaller and lighter, hence the 20/20. This unit is known for being very loud for 20/20 watts. In my eternal search for the perfect tone I...

Studio Pre - Metal tones? How metal? In need of advice.

I also have performed the deep mod on the 20/20 but it still has that mid frequency thing, it is very cool for crunchy rock tones but for high gain metal it is a bit annoying when trying to dial out that sound.

Studio Pre - Metal tones? How metal? In need of advice.

Thanks so much for your comments. I did notice that keeping down the bass knob and adding the low slider in the graphic eq helped with the flubbines, still it's not as tight as modern high gain amp are. True about not getting a crystal clean and high gain sound at the same time, as far as I've...

Studio Pre - Metal tones? How metal? In need of advice.

I forgot to add that it seemed that one of the foot switch jacks at the back didn't work properly, I think it was the reverb one if I'm not mistaken. Aside from that, the busted knobs and the jacks making those weird crackling noises the unit works well. Where can I get new knobs? Directly from...
