    Mark III: reverb decreases headroom

I mentioned in the OP, I tried multiple tubes. After exploration, I think its either normal - a lot of amps run their reverb tube hard and lose headroom when reverb compared to without reverb - or the reverb tube is run a bit too hot. I tested out a solid-state tube replacement, which seems to...

    Mark III: reverb decreases headroom

Hmm - that first example, the gain increasing with the reverb knob, is sort of what my amp seems to be doing. It's possible this 12AX7 reverb tube just has a short life, or it is just normal for the Mark III (like a lot of Fenders) to run the reverb tube hot (ie., it may not be an issue with...

    Mark III: reverb decreases headroom

Hmm, hadn't listened for a tonal change. I think there are two issues with my amp's reverb. - The effect send/return jacks may have been corroded, which can cause distortion when using the loop. Replacing the jacks or cleaning the contacts can fix this. - However, I still think I lose a bit of...

    Mark III: reverb decreases headroom

Anyone else notice that turning up the reverb decrease the amps headroom? I only noticed it recently, but I guess it makes sense. Certainly a Fender Princeton has more headroom than the Princeton Reverb... Anyway, I was on the clean channel with some reverb. I clicked on my wah and got some...

Mark III chassis dimensions: screw to front/back of chassis?

Can anyone please tell me the distance from the screws to the edges of the chassis? - How far the from the two back screws to the back of the chassis? - How far from the two front screws to the BOTTOM of the faceplate (since its slanted)?

Good blues setting for Mark III

Hmm, maybe try the setting Mesa describes in their manual that is supposed to sound similar to a Twin Reverb? Strat>TS9 ought to get close.

    Your Mark III settings

Looks like someone played a trick on you! The EQ is on and the sliders are all down - SILENCE! ;)

    Red Strip vs Blue Stripe

There is going to be a lot of overlap between different stripe models, sometimes more difference can be found between two amps of the same stripe than two amps of a different stripe (remember, these amps are 30 years old). The Blue is attributed with having an aggressive top-end, but the EQ...

    Your Mark III settings

I almost never use R2 so I think of the (input) volume control as a dynamics control for R1. I have it around 7 right now, but I change often depending on other factors. If I do use R2, the volume control works best around 7-9 IMO - nice crunch on R2 and even volume transition between channels...

Class A Mode: Do the 6L6's need to be plugged in?

Thanks! Now to try to see if I had the foresight (or hoarding) to save my old 6L6's!

Class A Mode: Do the 6L6's need to be plugged in?

From the manual: In an amp with four power tubes, the shorted tube will cause the one next to it to also turn red hot even though that tube is fine. You can determine which tube is actually bad by using the 60/100 or Class A switch to turn off two of the four tubes (it turns off the center two...

Class A Mode: Do the 6L6's need to be plugged in?

Yeah - I could be wrong, but that was my understanding. When I was using Celestion speakers (mostly V30's but also Golds and Gold Clones), I preferred the 6L6's alone over the added midrange of the EL34's. Now that I switched back to an EVM12L, I love the creamy mids of the EL34's. I just don't...

Class A Mode: Do the 6L6's need to be plugged in?

It works, your just supposed to use the 4ohm tap for an 8ohm load (or 8ohm tap for 16ohm load). IIRC there is an article about this published from Mesa, other threads discussing it, and I've talked to local amp techs as well. Unless you know something else about it? But the 6L6's just run a bit...

Class A Mode: Do the 6L6's need to be plugged in?

When you run 6L6's without EL34's, your supposed to use, for example, the 4ohm tap for an 8ohm speaker (or 8ohm tap for 16ohm speaker). Running the wrong load can distress your transformer (and even tubes), although Mesa does say theirs can handle it to a degree (as you mention above), yet there...

Class A Mode: Do the 6L6's need to be plugged in?

The manual says you can pull the center 6L6's in Class-A Mode and just run the EL34's, but does the transformer still expect an 8ohm speaker load, or a 16ohm load with the 6L6's pulled? I busted a 6L6 in an amp I'm selling so I put the 6L6's from my MKIII into that amp and I guess I don't have...

Preferred EL34s for the Mark III?

People often suggest Winged C's. People sometimes suggest Ruby BSTR's. Doug from Doug's tubes suggested BSTR's so thats what I bought. I like them a lot.

    GEQ Mod? [MKIII]

Love my MKIII and the GEQ is awesome, but I always feel like the 80hz slider also controls too much of the higher frequencies as well. I was wondering, and not necessarily considering doing this so much as just out of curiosity, if the 80hz slider could be modded to essentially be a high-pass...
