Mesa Color Code Plate Current Values (420 vs 440)

If TAD says it's so I would certainly trust their judgement on it - they have no reason to provide erroneous advice. Could be that the shorter bottle 420 is preferably biased colder still, it probably not being more than 25W in real terms.

    50/50 High Plates Voltage

I'm in a similar boat with my Fifty Fifty. The thing is closer to 500V on the plates with this fellow, a former US model converted to european voltages. I talked to a norwegian friend and amp tech on The Gear Page about this and he said this was pushing it but the valves should handle the...

    Need advice - Re-capping a 295 Simul-Class

Wow, I'm about to recap a Fifty Fifty which is just a fraction of what you have on the table. Most newer caps are shorter, which is a bonus these Sprague bgers being quite a handfull. I'd look for some kind of brand caps, like the ones TAD sell as theirs, JJ, Philips or similar. I am...

Quad Preamp 220 vs 240 volt

Is the PT wired up identically as well? I know some export Mesa PTs have one tap for each voltage.

Schematics for different version Fifty/ Fiftys?

I believe there are at least three different versions of the Fifty/ Fifty. My version has the blue pilot light, four larg filter caps and no choke. Are there any schematics for this particular version? I think that way back I managed to locate some for this version but I don't now when I need...

50/50 export model's wiring of primary and varistor photos?

Thanx, mate! That's all good, but it seems the OP of that thread also enquires about the section farthest to the left, which in this photo is partially obscured.

50/50 export model's wiring of primary and varistor photos?

Yes, you're quite correct about that. However + 20% does put the output valves in a bit of a hazard, particularly the screen grids are likely overtaxed by some margin. Thank you that would be very kind of you.

50/50 export model's wiring of primary and varistor photos?

I'm amidst of trying to sort out this converted american model Fifty/ Fifty. The PT seems to be the export version, so that checks out. But it doesn't have a varistor and the voltage is much higher than expected, unhealthily high if you're the screen grid of a 6L6GC. As it were it didn't look...

Method for Fifty/ Fifty PT removal?

Just how the heck was the PT in the Fifty/ Fifty fitted? Those four threaded studs at the bottom I understand. But then those other two holding it in place at the front? With basically no wiggle room those front-side two effectively see to that the PT effectively isn't going anywhere. It just...

    Internal tube change and cleaning. 2:50, 50/50, 2:90;

6V6s are likely to go bad before you know it, seeing that these amps are spec'ed at 450V on B+, some are even closer to 500V with that 20% variance Mesa allows for. The earlier Fifty/ Fifty featured a low voltage mode where 6V6s would have had an easier time to operate. If going with 6V6s you...

Just how is the OT of the 50/50 wired?

I'm about to re-cap my 50/50, a bias pot fitted and possibly even looking into having the OTs replaced. However I just don't get the wiring of the OT secondaries. The 8 ohm outs appear to have twin leads, orange and yellow. If I got it right the OTs were designed for 8 ohms, be it 2 x 4 ohms...

    7581As in the Fifty/ Fifty?

I do love the basic sound and operation of the Fifty/ Fifty I have. I just wish it had some more headroom. Do you think the TS 7581A would work in my favour here? Could the amp even handle those, you think? The PT looks rather sturdy, I think. If not then I suppose I'll just have to fit a...

    50/50 - Anyone tried 5751's?

In the power-amp the lower gain level is basically going to make the outputs harder to push and would likely only make it quiteter. Couldn't say this would be a desirable trait. Gain experiments in the pre-amp of an amp makes more sense, since you still would have plenty of opportunity to...

    what are the fillmore speakers?

These look very much like WGS British Lead speakers, the early ones w. rear vents - note the mosquito net grid used as FOD protection. I've seen pictures of them w. the same paper dome as the WGSs, not the mesh LHDC like Celestion would use for something of this design. My guess is that either...

My Fifty/ Fifty is going to make me absolutely nuts...

Cheers mate! It's brand new, so I had no reason to doubt it - at least I thought not. As it happens that very same suggestion came up during dinner w. my dad, so I measured it and turns out it may be the culprit we're looking for. Will keep you people posted should I still fail to suss this baby...

My Fifty/ Fifty is going to make me absolutely nuts...

Will try and remove the unit from its rack to make an inspection and possibly take some photos of it, as you suggest. But I've smelled nothing burnt and when I put it in quite recently nothing was out of the ordinary visually. Edit: Just took it out. Nothing funny looking about it from what I...

My Fifty/ Fifty is going to make me absolutely nuts...

No, the thing has some connection broken internally or otherwise. Measuring the connector for resistance my gauge reads infinate ohms, so something must have gone bust or worked loose.

My Fifty/ Fifty is going to make me absolutely nuts...

Tried different ways to connect the thing but it's just stone dead. I think I'll measure the primary on the PT to see what would happen. Funny that it seemed to run so smoothly yesterday and today...

My Fifty/ Fifty is going to make me absolutely nuts...

I have not been using my 50/50 for quite a while, since it had some issues that could have had something to do with it having been submitted to force to one of the presence knobs. Ah well, I did have it replaced and fired it up yesterday. Sounded good and strong and I felt I was back-in-busines...

    Stupid question about power amps

Another vote for the Fifty/Fifty. You'd probably find one of these on the used market for around €600 or thereabouts. There is a mod for these I believe shape the sound similarly to the 2:50, the purpose for it being to match it with the Triaxis pre-amp for a heavier and darker sound. The...
