4ohm speaker inputs- actually 8 ohms?

The MarkIV has three speaker outputs- one 8 ohm mono output, and two 4 ohm outputs, wired in parallel. I believe that means that each "4 ohm" socket connects to an 8 ohm load (cab). My Stiletto cab appears to have the same type of speaker inputs- one 8 ohm, and two "4 ohm" inputs. Does this...

Getting the most (and Marshally-sound from R2 channel MarkIV

Hi, I am generally satisfied with the Rhythm 2 channel of my MarkIV. I can get useable tones from it, but ideally I would like it to have more of that Marshall Plexi BARK type of sound, or at least like the Electradyne. I gotta say that the Electradyne NAILS that Plexi Bark sound! At the...

Darkening the voicing of the 50/50

Hi, I have a Mesa/Boogie 50/50 poweramp. I'm aiming for a really dark, low-growly type of sound. Grinding, roaring, really demonic low growl. I have tried lowering the presence and using external parametric EQ, but they have not worked. In fact using parametric EQ just makes it worse. The...

    KT77 valves for 50/50 poweramp?

Hi, I have a Mesa/Boogie 50/50 poweramp. At the moment the stock str420 valves aren't doing it for me. I'm running the amp into a modified speaker cabinet that has two 12" 200 watt ElectroVoice speakers (12S I think?). I'm aiming for a really dark, low-growly type of sound. Grinding, roaring...

    2:90 vs Recto 2:100

Hi, I'm interested in getting a stereo poweramp, particularly a Mesa/Boogie. The Strategy 400/500 & 295 are out of my league, so I won't concern myself with them. How does the 2:90 compare to the Recto 2:100? Both have a Modern mode, so I guess this is similar the the Modern/Red mode on...

    John Petrucci's distorted chorus tone?

What does/has John Petrucci use/d for chorus with high gain tones? Especially rhythm tones? Does he use his Eventide in the effects loop, in stereo? Or a chorus pedal set fully wet on one amp and run a dry amp on the other side? Or what? Please post if you know, or have any kind of idea, thanks.

Does anyone know what the Q value is for each of the EQ frequency sliders on the graphic equaliser?

Midrange roar boosted JCM800 tone out of an Engl Fireball

Hi folks. I have an Engl Fireball, and I really like its unique tone. But, I am keen to get some midrange roar Marshall JCM800 tones out of it, somehow. I am not sure how to go about this. What can I do to achieve this with the Fireball? outboard EQs, settings etc.? :?: This video...

Who here DOESN'T use the "Classic V" grapic EQ set

The "Classic V" seems to be the most popular graphic equaliser setting on the Mark series amps, for heavy high-gain distortion crunch. I actually use a different setting, on my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. The tone is a lot more aggressive, sharp, and crunchy.

Evolution of the tonal/midrange voicing in Mesa/Boogie amps-

(I posted this at HarmonyCentral, but would like input from here as well, please.) I'd like to discuss the tonal/midrange voicing of Mesa/Boogie's amplifiers, in particular the Mark series amps and the Rectifier series amps. How do you reckon the midrange voicing has evolved? It's obviously...

James Hetfield's Recto Tone- how does he get it?

Here is the Youtube video of James Hetfield performing the Waylon Jennings song Don't You think this Outlaw bit has done got out of hand?, at CMT Outlaws. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=rbaXAV56e7c This is the BEST I have EVER heard out of a Recto! I have never heard anyone use a Recto amp...

Quick tone test vid of my MarkIV

This video was shot the day I was trialling speaker cabinets for my Mesa/Boogie MarkIV. I literally had 5 minutes to set the amp up, rush & make some settings, and try out the channels. We all know how sensitive the controls are, and basically I just knocked them into a position. In the video...

Using guitar synth effects with a MarkIV..

Is this okay? this may seem dumb, but I am not sure. Would a guitar synth effect unit sound fine in front of this amp? Or would it need to be in the effects loop? And if in the effects loop, would the effect need a buffer sort of thing to step down the signal so it will work okay? I've read...

Help- building my own IIC+ preamp

Hi folks, I tried posting this earlier but my browser crashed, yep and it was Firefox (which is odd). I'm an amateur/intermediate guitarist, I've outgrown my Roland Cube-30, my SansAmp pedal, and my Line6 Flextone II. I've had it with woofy cabs and modelling, I want to make my own tone. In...

    Just joined the Boogie Board

Hi folks, I just joined this message board, from a link posted at the Metallica Club message board. Well, being a fan of Metallica obviously makes me a fan of Mesa/Boogie amps. I love their crunchy sounds and like learning how they make them. Playing the guitar myself I'm also on the pursuit...
