What is the best amp you have ever heard or played?

^ good post. You're right, it's not for everyone and that's the same story for rectos too. Actually, my IV is only the second one I've ever played. The first was a combo about 5 years earlier and I HATED it, for the life of me I couldn't get a good tone. The second time around I had a lot more...

What is the best amp you have ever heard or played?

Dude it's so worth it. I can't think of anything that it can't do well. I go from Jeff Buckley cleans (need a new/modded reverb to get it where I want it) to some down tuned 7 string stuff and it takes it all with ease. I had some doubts with the heavier stuff being recorded since most of the...

What is the best amp you have ever heard or played?

Man, this is a loaded question for sure! There have been a lot of amps that blew me away. Vintage Fenders and what not for cleans and a little grit. One Marshall 2203 in particular (the dude thought it was signed by Jimmy Hendrix, "No dude, that's Jim Marshall's signature screened on there..."...

trying to educate myself on the terms and function

    1. It doesn't turn into a solid state amp. Only the rectification is diode. All you're 12ax7s and 6L6s are getting used. 2. Yes, V1 and V2 are different positions, different positions affect different parts of the amp. Anything from your gain channel to your reverb. Different brands have...

    Mesa Nomad 45... school me!

True, I usually had it up all the way on the clean channel and completely off on the gain channels and left it switched on all the time. It gave a bit of "air" to my cleans without swallowing them up, since Mesa reverb on 10 is like Fender reverb on 2. I've been thinking about modding the...

    Mesa Nomad 45... school me!

Oh man, it's been a while since I've actually had my hands on an F-30. Most of my F-series experience comes from the 50 but seeing as they have the same preamp most of the core characteristics are still the same. Obviously the typical flavor change when the power section is running 84s (a little...

Do Recto's sound better with ceramic magnet pickups?

Ceramic magnets tend to be a little colder and sharper than most alnicos and are generally used in high output pickups to help them cut through. I think it translates to tighter bass for a lot of recto users, keep in mind some people still have little to no idea what those knobs can really do.

    Groove Tubes 6L6-B randall MESA?

www.thetubestore.com/sovtek5881.html I'm going off of this and I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere else too but all I can find is this right at the moment. I think nowadays since we guitar players are one of the few groups left actually still using tubes companies like groove tubes just label...

    Groove Tubes 6L6-B randall MESA?

They're relabeled Sovteks, Mesa sells them as the STR425. One of the strongest new (non-NOS) tubes you can get. If you've tried them before and like them then I say go for it.

Am I the only guy who likes the Stiletto Stage 1?

I remember trying the Stilettos when they very first came out and I thought it was a really cool amp. I've tried the stage II and like it as well but I didn't fond anything wrong with the first version. I was able to dial in pretty convincing plexi-style cleans to beyond 2203 gain very well...

Using a guitar head as a bass amp. Suggested Mods etc.

Depends on how you're running it and how hard. I did a little internet research (how scientific  ) because I was filling in to play bass for a week at a church camp and we played a couple times a day. I had to borrow a bass and the sound guy said that they tried just running the bass...

Factory Seconds from TubeDepot? Anyone try 'em?

Hey guys, I was browsing through tubedepot.com and noticed the factory second tubes in there for cheap. I'm a little strained right now on cash but my Mark IV needs some new power tubes in the worst way. (The volume cuts out and won't come back on after a couple minutes of playing and...

    Mesa Nomad 45... school me!

I've owned both the Nomad 45 head and 1x12 combo. Like Koreth said, a lot of people view them as the redheaded step-child of the Mesa line but they do have a following. I think it comes from the fact that when most people think of Mesa amps they usually tend to think of the Mark series or the...

Do Mark V's have to be cranked to sound good?

Quick answer: While it will pretty much always sound better at higher volumes, it still sounds great at more reasonable levels. Especially with the 10w setting you can get the power section to open up a bit and get that nice "bloom." The thing with cranking old Marshall and Vox amps is that a...

mark 4 users..where do you keep your 750 slider on the eq?

I run a pretty strong V for my lead channel with the 750 about halfway below the mid line. The amp has a ton of mids already as others have said. I usually run my actual mid knob around 7 or 8 so there's still plenty of grind but the "California Smile" just makes it get nice and chunky. I...

Which mark is your favourite? III , IV, V ?

I like my IVb from what I've played on. I've played a couple IIBs, a red, blue and no stripe III and a couple Vs. I was saving up for a V when I got my hands on a mint IV for $1,050. The V is a bit more versatile but I found that my ears prefer the IV overall. The IIs dominated in the clean and...

    Trem-o-verb Head - $700 (Seattle)

Too bad that got removed, my roomie was looking for a tremoverb. That's a dream price too. I had another friend get one at that price from a pawn shop because the power tubes were shot and the shop thought it was "broken." 8)

Okay to play acoustic guitar through my LSS?

I'd say to be very cautious with plugging acoustics into electric amps. Though it works, and can sound pretty darn good while doing so I wouldn't put my 100% stamp of approval on it for long term use. Electric amps have a frequency range that is a bit more focused towards that of the magnetic...

You know what really grinds my gears?

In addition to and contrasting the OP. I can't stand it when a new high gain amp comes out and some older dude who tries to get his "heavy" on by cranking the gain and scooping the mids while going on to play a cliche pentatonic blues rock lick on his S/S/S Strat tuned to standard. It doesn't...

    Alternative to Mesa F-50

What kind of gain sounds are you after? It sounds to me like you just used the F-50 as a clean amp, and the F-50's cleans are very blackface style Fender type tones. So what else are you looking for other than Fender like cleans with an OCD up front?
