Open Back 1x12 Cabinet buzz fix?

The 1st test I would do is to take a rag, cloth, or old tshirt and drape over or clip it to the panel. If that works, I would then try starting with small amounts of damping material. Not too much as that could alter the sound of the cab. As a non-permanent solution I would try taking...

    Awesome Tone at Lower Volume

Nod to the last 2 replies as that is where I currently am on this journey to get great tone while saving my hearing and not waking my wife up at night. A few things I have learned, all of these can be found in comments throughout this forum: 1. Some amps really need to be turned up to get into...

Mark V 35 tube wear in 25 and 10 watt mode

I just assume that the pair that is used more will have more wear and swap their positions every few months, switching the inner pair with the outer pair. All 4 tubes should be matched, so using them in any position should be fine as long as you're only using the same matched quad set.

Best pedals to improve the Mark series overdrive tone

Agree with what woodbutcher65 said, it sounds like you may actually want a Marshall. Personally, I think the mark series overdrive tone is already great, but a few pedals can add some variety. I use an Xotic EP booster right before the preamp, it adds a little color to the sound and pushes the...

More SPL from the Mark V - 35 (combo)

This depends on your current settings, especially the gain, mid/boost and master. I assume it's already running it at 35 watts. Since you've already tried adding another cab, maybe try a 2x12 cab along with the combo's speaker? Most amps with 4 x EL84 are rated at 30 watts. Mesa "squeezes"...

Very frustrated trying to change V1 preamp tube

On my V35 head, I found it much easier to remove the front panel of the amp to access V1-V3. It's attached with 4 screws , comes right off and goes right back on without issues.

    V 35 Tube Swap

I've swapped V1 for a 12AU7 on other boogies before and tried with the V35. Channel 2 sounded great, but channel 1 did not. I could never get my clean sound right with that. I swapped out V2 with a 12AY7 and got what I was looking for. I tried a 12AU7 in V2 as well, but preferred the sound of...

Anyone got any good Metal settings for DC-5???

More or less, yes. It would just be a pure gain boost with minimal tone shaping, but you would need to bypass that with a capacitor to separate the 2 stages. Common values of these coupling caps are .047 or .022. Look at the cap connected to pin 6 of V2b/3rd gain stage for example. This will...

Anyone got any good Metal settings for DC-5???

I would have to agree with previous posters. It depends on how you define metal tone. To me the metal tone starts with bass and treble up, mids down, sometimes as low as possible. AKA scooped. The DC's have a hardwired tonestack circuit between the 2nd and 3rd gain stages (V2A & V2B) in the lead...

    Anybody use a Power Soak?

I have a DIY unit used almost exclusively at home. Every time I have tried it in a band setting, I have ended up turning it off and just controlling the output knob. At home, it does come in very handy to be able to keep the same settings while taking it down to acceptable home levels. I use...

    JJ EL844 tubes in a DC-3

photogold, I would say there is only 1 way to really find out, and that's by trying. I played a little loud this past weekend with another guitarist and bassist, no drummer. I still had the output levels rather low, so I would say yes, there should be enough headroom. I'd say that account from...

    JJ EL844 tubes in a DC-3

There is definitely less headroom. I normally play channel 1 with the gain just at the point where the preamp tubes start breaking up. So I really don't play with a completely clean sound. But that being said, you should be able to keep channel 1 clean if you keep the gain and master low... to...

    JJ EL844 tubes in a DC-3

I believe you can get matched quad set from Euro tubes and request that they send ones within MB's specs. If your amp's bias is still factory set, that could be a route to take. Another tip: http://forum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=52634 I put a 12AY7 in the PI (V6, leftmost preamp...

    JJ EL844 tubes in a DC-3

I think a previous owner had the bias adjusted and the tubes run hotter than normal. The factory set fixed bias for MBs tend to run the tubes a little on the cooler side, from what I understand. I had been considering taking it to a tech to get it set back to factory specs. But the EL844s seem...

    JJ EL844 tubes in a DC-3

Just curious to see if any DC-3 owners out there have tried these yet. http://www.eurotubes.com/euro-EL844.htm I bought a DC-3 a few months ago. The previous owner had put in 4 JJ EL84 tubes and it sounded pretty good with the expected high-mid emphasis. I recently replaced them with JJ EL844...

    12ay7 PI?

I bought a DC3 (orig) a few months ago and I started using an EH 12AY7 in the PI about a month ago. It sounds excellent. I was not too crazy about that tube in other positions or in other amps, but it seems to complement the other tubes I have in that DC (a mix of MB, JJ and Mullard 12ax7). It...
