I have a bb preamp, an el capistan and a bluesky in front of mine all the time in the top boost mode, and it sounds great. I also use a Maxon od808 to push the h1 setting, and that sounds awesome as well.

The bb preamp is great for both low and higher gain stuff. It's great for getting the Marshall flavor too. Checkout the videos of Andy Timmons on YouTube. He uses one in front of a lonestar (I think).

If it's just happening when you switch it, it could be a difference in the power settings between the channels. I think I read in the manual that would cause a pop sound when switching. I know some other Mesa amps pop because of static build up, but I have no idea what causes that or how to...

I used mine with an orange 212 for a while, and got over the size difference pretty quick. It sounded good. I ended up switching to a sour mash 112 open back (18 watt dimensions) with a greenback clone. And ended up liking that set up much more, and it's a great buy at around $250.

99.9% of the time, I use the top boost channel into a Sourmash cab with a greenback. The sound is awesome. I actually just added a BB Preamp in front with really good results too.

Have you tried playing with the cab turned around? It'll sound a little different to you (not anything that will affect your playing), but you should still hear it fine in a room that size and it gives the guy running the PA way more control. The people in the front will love you for it too.

can't you just chain the cabs together and run them out of the 4 ohm output? (most cabs, in my experience, allow you to do this) (1/R equivalent) = (1/R1) + (1/R2) So you would have 1/8 + 1/8, which is 2/8, which is the same as 1/4. So your total resistance would end up being 4 ohms...
