Persistent V1 tube failures in my Dual Rec - any ideas?

Hey guys - hoping someone can shed some light on this for me. I have a non-multi-watt 3ch DR in which I have been running the following tubes for the past 3 months: V1 - Tung Sol V2 - EH V3 - TAD V4 - JJ V5 - Sovtek LPS Power - JJ E34L Rectifier - EH At practice two weeks ago, I lost the Tung...

Safe Impedance Mis-Match - Rectoverb Head

Agreed. As long as the speaker impedance is greater than the amp output impedance, you are fine. Never run it the other way around (speaker impedance less than the amp output impedance) - you could/probably will fry your OT. Think of it like having a 8 gallon bucket of water (your amp) and you...

JJ E34Ls in my 3ch DR - YES!

...but ironically the huge Metallica sound was actually Mark series, not DRs.....go figure....

JJ E34Ls in my 3ch DR - YES!

Agree. If Mesa intended for the amp to be "designed only for 6L6s", then why did they put the bias switch in that lets you run EL34s? The amp was obviously designed to be run with either. And even if it wasn't overtly designed to work with EL34s, it doesn't change the fact that it sounds ****...

JJ E34Ls in my 3ch DR - YES!

I decided to try JJ E34Ls (actually Groove Tubes relabeled JJs since my guy was out of branded JJs) in my 3ch (not born again) DR, and WOW - I absolutely love the result. I've seen other posts for and against these tubes in the DR, but I'm a believer. To be clear, I was not trying to make my...

how many of you use your dual/triple recs in.........

That's what I have in my 1960AV - I kept two of the stock Celestion/Marshall V30s and replaced the other two with a Mojo BV-30H, which is their "clone" of a G12H-30 - put those in an x-pattern. Also installed Teb Weber Beam Blockers, and hardwired the cab for 16 ohm single input (got rid of the...

Where's the thread for ok cathode follower preamp tubes?

I remember a thread that listed several preamp tubes (other than the Boogie Chinese/JJ) that were OK to use in the cathode follower positions. I've searched but can't locate it - does anyone happen to have it bookmarked?? Thanks!

how many of you use your dual/triple recs in.........

The 3ch DR is a fabulous Rock Amp. It's unfortunate that the Rectos seem to have a reputation in some circles as a one-trick-metal-pony, because they are one of the best straight up rock amps I have played - especially the 3 ch versions - much more versatile than a Marshall, for example, IMHO...

    Speakers ????

G12T-75s are nothing like V30s, IMO. A lot of people like them, but it depends on what sound you are going for. It seems like a lot of metal guys like the 75s - I think they are more mid-scooped than V30s, which given the Marshall cabs natural mid-boost, may work well if that is the sound you...

Dual Rectifier and Marshall 1960 Lead Cabinet

As with all things, it depends on what sound you are after, and it also depends on which "Marshall Cab" you are talking about. There are a few variations of the 1960, and they can sound drastically different. I use a Marshall 1960av "vintage" which has Celestion v30s with my DR, and I think it...

    Speake cabs and wattage

Cab style/size will make a big difference in tone. Speaker type will make a difference. Speaker wattage does not make a difference (for tone). Unfortunately, the only way to decide what you like is to go play a few - it's very subjective, and a lot depends on what kind of tone you want to get.

    Rock tone from recto?

I get great rock tones from my DR through a Marshall 1960AV 4x12. In fact, I bought my DR specifically for rock tones - I don't play metal at all. I tried the obligatory Marshall head through Marshall cab and didn't like it. I tried a DR through my Marshall cab and it was spot on. I do dial...

I need to be ohm schooled

I don't completely agree. It's not so much the tubes you have to worry about, it's the output transformer. It is generally not a good idea to have a speaker load that is LESS than the output you are using. We all know you should never run a tube amp without a load, and running it into a...

    Multi-Watt Dual Rectifier or Roadster

Odd that your son's clean channel isn't very loud. I have a non-multi-watt 3 channel DR, and my clean channel is often the loudest channel. I don't think you can go wrong with either amp. The Roadster would be more versatile of course being 4 ch vs 3. I think you will find them to be very...

    Cleaning your amp

Best thing for Tolex is a toothbrush and orange cleaner. Make sure the orange cleaner actually has "natural citrus extracts/solvents" in it, and is not just some generic cleaner with orange smell added. It is the natural citrus that does the hard work. I bought a white DR head that was...

Switch Doctor Switch + External Switching on 3 Ch DR?

Hey guys. I found a few threads on external switching, and based on the info in those, I think what I want to do will work, but would certainly appreciate some confirmation from you guys before I order something. Switch Doctor sells this 2 button switch (link below), which is technically a...
