    School me on Filter Caps.

Not sure where you're getting your information, but last time I checked, Mesa was a privately owned company, no shareholders to answer to or make happy. However, they will try to save a buck where they can, which is why they no longer have point-to-point power sections, and most off-board leads...

    Cabinet Build!

Thanks, but my goal was to make it look authentic. The only measurements I can pull from my combo is the angle of the front , and the width and depth from the top. I'd like the actual height width, and depth from the bottom of a headshell, as well as the dimensions for the reverb pan cutout on...

    Cabinet Build!

Well, now that I have some free time to kill, I thought I'd get the ball rolling on my plans to convert my Mark III combo into a head and Thiele mini stack. I'm min the planning stages as of now. I modeled the Thiele on my computer so I can have exact measurements. Its a hybrid design that...

Convince me to keep my Mark III

That's probably the case, actually. GAS to the point where I'm willing to make a sacrifice. I just hope that if I ever get the chance to try one, I'll be extremely disappointed, and use the money to recondition my Mark III, and maybe convert it to a short head/Thiele setup. Maybe a good...

Convince me to keep my Mark III

As you know, I love my Mark III blue stripe to death, and have spent a lot of time tinkering with it. It has some great tones, great versatility, and a great history. Not to mention an automatic membership here in the vintage Marks forum  . After three years or so of...

    Coupling effect ....

Step 6: ???? Step 7: Profit I get it now. But still, that's the point of the removable casters. Take them off when you don't need them, quickly attach when the amp needs hauling around.

    Solder flux "crust"

Nope. AFAIK, the wrinkles are from the factory when the unfinished caps are dipped in the orange coating to seal them up. Good deal man! Your amp is pretty clean for the most part, so I'd just expect the blue caps/low voltage caps/bias mod to be dealt with, and you'll have a new amp!

    Coupling effect ....

But the furniture dolly itself has wheels, so doesn't that defeat the purpose? I've read somewhere that a guy got better bass response when he took off the casters and let the amp sit on its feet. Give it a try. Just put the casters back on at the end of the gig.

    Studio 22 Prototype

It definitely looks like a prototype of some sort. All the holes are for ventilation. I've never seen a .22 with a Mark II-style PCB. I'd have it sent in to be reconditioned. It's not the type of project I'd take on myself.

    Solder flux "crust"

Unless the Orange Drops are physically damaged, they'll last the lifetime of the amp. The 220's and the 30uF spragues are the same age, just a different color. They should be replaced every 20 years or so. These look original, so now would be a good time to swap them for a fresh set. The low...

    Solder flux "crust"

Yes, that is true that the old Carbon Comp SGRs are inferior than the Xicons you just installed, and it is true that they sound different. The reason is because they are inferior. Carbon comp resistors tend to fluctuate in resistance in high voltage applications, i.e., in an SGR position. That...

Mesa Boogie Mark III Redstripe Problem

The EQ switch/LDR/both are probably past it. It sounds like the EQ is disengaging momentarily, which leads me to believe that it's a switching problem, not a component in the signal path.

    Solder flux "crust"

A cap job is probably the culprit. When the board was soldered at the factory, flux was only applied to the off-board connection wires/larger components. Everything else should have been machine wave soldered. Any flux within the connections should have burned off before the solder cooled, and...

Mark III clean channel volume fade-in.

Actually, no. And, no. LDR's are quite simple devices. You could make one yourself if you wanted. It's basically an infrared LED pointed at a photocell (light dependent resistor) all cast in plastic. It causes a negligible amount of signal degredation, and no noise when switching, which is why...

    Mark V in 10 watts

90W mode-all 4 tubes in Simul-Class. 45W mode- 2 center tubes in "Extended Class A." Really, it's Class AB push/pull with a bit hotter bias, so there's much less crossover distortion. 10W mode- 2 tubes closer to the rectifier in SE Class A. Both tubes are active in parallel, so acting as one...

    Mark V with 6v6 tubes

Switch it into Variac power mode, and stick them in (or, the other way around. It's safer that way). Theoretically, they could be operated at any of the 3 power settings, preferably with the tube rectifier in 45 watt mode. A good estimate for the new power levels would be 50W, 25W, ~6W. Just...

    Complete Mark III Schematic

Oh, god, it's been too long. I haven't been active on the forum lately due to tons of things going on IRL, but I thought I'd drop by. I noticed that the file sharing site I've been using for the schems has been shut down  , so if anyone has any ideas for a new host, I'm all ears. In the...

    Skinned Alive!

Looks great as always, GTS. And as always, I've had a burning question about your work: Where do you source your hardware? E.g. metal corners, handles, chassis mounting accessories? It looks exactly like the stuff Mesa would have used on their old amps. Do you order direct from the manufacturer...

Help me transfer my Mark V settings to my Mark IIC+

Here's what I think will work: Volume 1: Pulled, 7.5 (This is what Volume 1 is internally set as for the V) Treble: Pulled, 6 Bass: Pull if desired, 1.5-2 Middle: 0-1 Master: Pushed IN (Pull Deep is turned off in the V) Set to taste Lead Drive: Pull if desired  , 8.5 (The Gain control on...

Anybody use their Nomad with a Mini Amp Gizmo?

Just wondering, as it's not on the supported amps list, but I'm assuming that it'll work with the cable for a 3ch Recto, since it's all analog anyway. My friend wants to buy one, but only if he can find a MIDI switching interface. After hearing so much good feedback on the Boogie Board about it...
