Sudden loss of treble and presence...Mark IV B

Put the old preamp tubes back in and see if behavior changes. If not put new tubes back in and give all of your pots a good cleaning. That would be my approach. Good Luck.

Tube replacement with other than Mesa or Groove Tubes.

Ahh tubes - a world all its own. Solid State guys are so ignorant! Good for you on ditching the pedals; I did a dozen years ago - I'm a better player for it.

    Mark IV

Versatility my boy - versatility. I've covered many genres of music with this thing; from quiet and sweet to LOUD and in your face. YMMV

    Mark IV revA 12AT7 tube

Holy 6 year old thread resurrection Batman! When my MkIV went to Mesa for rehab they called me and said "We are changing out your 12AX7 in the reverb to a 12AT7, ok?" Probably for warranty purposes. A 12AX always worked just fine.

What are the necessities of gigging gear?

Looks like the guys with much experience carry much the same items. My carry along contains almost everything mentioned. Its a balancing act between carrying too much or not enough. Experience is what defines it.

    The great therapy of music

therapeutic indeed.... Last Thursday evening while napping I suffered a bite from an unknown bug on my leg. What started as the size of a mosquito bite by Fri morning had become a 6"x6" patch of owie owie throbbing hurtfulness with a low grade fever. Threw a bandage on and went to work anyway...

How loud is a Mark IVa Combo

Mark IV w/recommended settings = STOOPID LOUD. GAWD. If our band played at those recommended settings around these parts we would be sitting home most of the time I'm thinkin'. Fortunately we play a STOOPID alot. We control ourselves. My Mark Iv lives in Class A tweed most of its life with...

    Stomps or Multieffects?

After I got my Mark IV - I ditched ALL of my effects(my crutches). Stomp boxes, digital processors, all of it. Its all collecting dust in a corner. It was PAINFUL at first. Turned out to be the smartest thing I ever did. Made me a much better player. It made develop STYLE and TASTE and my sound...

Does your amp get louder as the night goes on???

My guess also would be something electrical in nature, A component getting hot or something. I too once thought this symptom was happening occasionally - thought I imagined it. After a total retube and overhaul by Mesa - I haven't notice anything like that any more. keep us posted.

How do I know which 12AX7's and when to replace?

I wouldn't know what bad preamp tubes sound like. Thats why you need known good spares and start rolling them through the amp to see what changes happen (if any).

How do I know which 12AX7's and when to replace?

Rotating them like that is a method, What makes you think you need pre-amp tubes? Pre-amp tubes last a looooong time. Decades even. What I did was start a collection of NOS tubes and new tubes and changed them one by one until I found the one being the pain. Turned out it was a power tube....

    Draining Mark IV Filter Caps

I can't believe someone didn't answer this for you. I haven't been around lately. Simplest way is to have amp turned on and not on standby. Have guitar plugged in with volume all the way up. Flip amp power switch to off while striking all the strings on the guitar. The sound of the guitar...
