A Cocktail of Tubes in a Roadster Head

I've had my Roadster head for about six months, using it as a backup or second amp. I'd been getting some pretty great sounds out of it, but never liked it as much as my JP-2C. In the past week, I've almost complete retubed it. It's a whole new beast now. Clearer and more articulate distortion...

    Telefunken, Sylvania in JP-2C

I've decided to slowly experiment with some NOS tubes in my JP-2C. First, I replaced the stock Mesas STR-440s with dual getter Sylvania STR-387s.The amp is thicker, with a smoother midrange, and more detailed highs without being harsh. There's a bit more thump. It's noticeable but not dramatic...

    Roadster + 5-Band EQ = Hell yeah!

I mainly use a JP2C, but have a Roadster for a backup or for a different flavor. (Actually, my band is in hiatus right now, so I suppose I am once again a basement player. Alas.) I like being able to get lots of sounds out of an amp without having to change the knobs each time. However, I found...

    Helix and the JP-2C

I'm sick of tap-dancing, so I decided to take a chance with replacing all my pedals--including my midi footswitch--with the Helix, set up for 4CM. I don't hear any sound degradation, despite the digital conversion before and after the preamp. I tried A/Bing with my analog pedals and direct in...

No need to keep the Marshall! The JP-2C can mimic a JVM OD1

I bought a LE JP-2C a few weeks ago. Amazing amp. Everything I ever wanted the Mark V (which I sold five years ago) to be. It just delivers. (My only gripe is that the foot switch somewhat sucks. But I switched to a MIDI Moose, so no worries.) Since selling the Mark V, I've gone through 5150...

    FS: Mark V Combo, $1600 + shipping

Mesa Boogie Mark V combo. Purchased in January 2010. Has nearly three years of warranty left. The warranty will transfer to the new owner. I will also throw in 2 SED EL34 and TAD EL34B-STR power tubes, a set of Mesa STR 447 EL34 power tubes, and a pair of Tung Sol EL34B power tubes. My other...

    Mark V reverb problem. Ugh.

A few weeks ago, whenever I was using reverb on channel 3, after about 10 seconds without playing, the amp would start producing feedback. It sounded like a microphonic tube. This would only happen on channel 3. I could stop the high pitched squeal by turning down or turning off the reverb. I...

    Played a IIc+ today

Empire Music in Providence, RI, has a IIc+ combo, GEQ, reverb, simulclass, for only $1600. I did the loop test and confirmed it's a IIc+. I definitely prefer the real thing to the IIc+ mode on the V, but that's almost entirely due to the pull deep control. Otherwise they really do sound very...

    Going back to 6L6s

I've been an evangelist for EL34s, but I'm going back to 6L6s for a while. I've started dialing the amp with much less of a scoop, and I find I like it with 6L6s more. With EL34s and the 750 slider up, it just sounds too bright and not bassy enough for me. Anyone else go back to 6L6s after a...

Who has a V30 in his combo?

I'm about ready to make the switch. Has anyone here tried this? What difference did it make?

    My Mark V is Back!

I finally have my Mark V back! Quick summary/reminder of my situation: A dead JFET caused the preamp to be muted permanently. The tech repaired it, but when I got it home, I realized that the EQ also didn't work properly. At the time, I wasn't sure if this might be the tech's fault. I now know...

    Ola Englund Mark V demo

Watch this here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-HXfoexXsU&feature=player_embedded You can see the settings at the end. You might not have heard of Ola, but he's known on Harmony Central Amp Forum as a guy who consistently gets awesome tones from amps. What's surprising here is that he did...

Yet another problem; time to demand a new amp

Short version: My GEQ sliders do not work. Only preset EQ works. This is the third major problem in 13 months. As you may recall, this week got my V back after its second round of repairs. When I brought it home, I just put in my normal settings before even turning the amp on. Having not...

    Thinking about ditching my V

I've gone 3 weeks without a working Mark V, and I don't know when I'll get it back from the shop. This is the amp's second time being repaired. (It also ended up having three preamp tubes die simultaneously 6 days after purchase. Hmmm.) In 13 months of ownership, I'll only have had 11 months of...

Guess my V will need to go to the shop again.

I was playing loudly today--I hardly ever get to crank this amp--and heard a loud pop. After that, my amp worked, but the volume was minimal. I can hear all three channels, and they sound intact, but they are whisper quiet. (Channel 2 is the loudest, channel 3 is in the middle, and 1 is...

    Mark V owners in apartments?

Hey guys, I'm strongly considering moving to DC for a new job, and I'll then need to decide whether to live in a condo or apartment near what will be my work (Georgetown University) or in a house farther out with a longer commute. I'm worried that if I live in an apartment, I'll need to ditch...

    Played a IV and V side-by-side today

I haven't played a Mark IV since getting the V. Since some people still claim the IV has a better lead channel, I'm going to check out the IV again and see what I think. I wonder if I'll come home with the IV so I can try them side by side.

IIC+ is the worst mode on the Mark V, IMO

I don't think I've found a setting yet on IIC+ mode where I can't improve the tone by flipping the switch to IV. (Though this may require turning the bass knob down a tad.) IIC+ just seems like a wimpy version of IV. Anyone else agree?

    Mesa Studio Pre

Has anyone here tried one of these? How do they compare to the Mark V?
