A Cocktail of Tubes in a Roadster Head

I've had my Roadster head for about six months, using it as a backup or second amp. I'd been getting some pretty great sounds out of it, but never liked it as much as my JP-2C. In the past week, I've almost complete retubed it. It's a whole new beast now. Clearer and more articulate distortion...

    Telefunken, Sylvania in JP-2C

Update: So, I tried putting it in V1 of the Roadster instead. That's an even better use for it. The Roadster has a tendency to be dark and somewhat congested, which can be hard to dial out. The on-board EQ seems to hit the wrong frequencies for me--the treble has too much bite, the presence...

    Telefunken, Sylvania in JP-2C

I've decided to slowly experiment with some NOS tubes in my JP-2C. First, I replaced the stock Mesas STR-440s with dual getter Sylvania STR-387s.The amp is thicker, with a smoother midrange, and more detailed highs without being harsh. There's a bit more thump. It's noticeable but not dramatic...

    Roadster + 5-Band EQ = Hell yeah!

I mainly use a JP2C, but have a Roadster for a backup or for a different flavor. (Actually, my band is in hiatus right now, so I suppose I am once again a basement player. Alas.) I like being able to get lots of sounds out of an amp without having to change the knobs each time. However, I found...

    JP-2C Channel 1 Volume Fluctuation

They happened to me. Bad tube. I think it was v3.

    Cabinet Pairing with JP-2C

Today I Switched out my Marshall 1960a for an older oversized Recto cab. Sounds much better: fatter but still tight bottom, snarling midrange, nicer top end.

    Helix and the JP-2C

Yes, I had a group loop problem as soon as I set 4CM up. But I already had one of those EbTech 2-channel hum eliminators, and that completely eliminated the problem.

    Helix and the JP-2C

P.S. Another nice bit about the helix is that it includes a useful model of the Boogie 5-band EQ. If you want a *third* GEQ, you can set up the Helix to turn off EQ 1 and 2 and then run the GEQ model after the preamp. For instance, I use EQ 1 for Petrucci-style tone, EQ 2 for a...

    Helix and the JP-2C

I'm sick of tap-dancing, so I decided to take a chance with replacing all my pedals--including my midi footswitch--with the Helix, set up for 4CM. I don't hear any sound degradation, despite the digital conversion before and after the preamp. I tried A/Bing with my analog pedals and direct in...

No need to keep the Marshall! The JP-2C can mimic a JVM OD1

I bought a LE JP-2C a few weeks ago. Amazing amp. Everything I ever wanted the Mark V (which I sold five years ago) to be. It just delivers. (My only gripe is that the foot switch somewhat sucks. But I switched to a MIDI Moose, so no worries.) Since selling the Mark V, I've gone through 5150...

    What fuzz?

I've used an Addrock Geranium Fuzz and then a Phoenix Custom Electronics Fuzz. Both are germanium-based fuzz faces. I typically ran them into a slightly dirty Tubescreamer and then into the clean channel.

gain question about the mark v

For a brutal metal sound, I used triode mode, treble and mids both at 3:00, presence at 11:00 or lower, gain at 3:00 on Mark IV, and EL34s. I scooped the mids on the EQ, boosted the bass sliders, but did not put the 2200 or 6600 sliders up as high as others do. The combination of these settings...

    FS: Mark V Combo, $1600 + shipping

Mesa Boogie Mark V combo. Purchased in January 2010. Has nearly three years of warranty left. The warranty will transfer to the new owner. I will also throw in 2 SED EL34 and TAD EL34B-STR power tubes, a set of Mesa STR 447 EL34 power tubes, and a pair of Tung Sol EL34B power tubes. My other...

    Mark IV vs Mark V

A few years ago, I was strongly considering replacing the V with a IV, since everyone claimed the IV's lead channel was superior. A local GC had a used IV in stock. I spent over two hours A/B'ing a V and IV through the same cab. I found that at any of the settings I would use, the IV and the V's...

    Can't get reverb to work...

What do you do for BMW? I nearly bought a 3 series sedan a few months ago, but the poor reliability ratings scared me off.

    Compressors

I bought a Barber Tone Press. It sounds great. It adds sustain without changing my tone. I also use it to boost the signal, so it adds a little grit on the OD channels. I get a full, thick tone with it. That said, I'm not sure that I prefer it to my BB Preamp MB. The BB Preamp and Tone Press...

    Can't get reverb to work...

Better call Mesa. I've owned my Mark V for just over 2 years, and the reverb circuit has died twice on me. (In fact, it died for the second time just two weeks ago.) Mesa amps are known for being extremely reliable. I'm curious, though, whether the Mark V is a little too much like a BMW--high...

Preamp Tube Problem? Channels 1 & 3 Major Volume & Gain Loss

    Yes, I'd check V1 and V3 first. Then V4 and V5.

    Mark V reverb problem. Ugh.

A few weeks ago, whenever I was using reverb on channel 3, after about 10 seconds without playing, the amp would start producing feedback. It sounded like a microphonic tube. This would only happen on channel 3. I could stop the high pitched squeal by turning down or turning off the reverb. I...
