Does anyone have a direct comparison between the stage I and II heads? I've been offered a stage I but worried it will lack that mesa growl. Is it possible to convert a Stage I to a Stage II spec?

I'm chatting to someone about a trade for a Stiletto but can't work out if it's a stage I or a stage II. is there a sure fire way to find out? I thought all Stage II heads had the "ii" above the input jack but he disagrees. Any help appreciated.
