The only time where a balanced pre-amp tube is important is when you are using it for the phase inverter. That's because the internal gain of both sides of the tube needs to be as close to equal as possible. It isn't all that important in any other stage of your amp.

Russ, thanks for the reply. I play a strat through a barber tone press, and a wah. I also have a holy grail in the effects loop. I don't prefer class A, but i like triode over pentode and harmonics over mid gain.

I've found running it at full power makes it sound a lot fuller. I don't do it for volume purposes, tweed is still too loud. But I have found that it can sound somewhat thin and buzzy as compared to full power. Any other comments?

It really sounds like a tube problem to me, too. How old is the amp? When was the last time you changed the tubes?

My mark iv makes my strat sound like a strat :D

Yeah, he used a mark 1 pre-amp starting in 75 or 76, and starting in the early 80s he went to a mark 2 for a while.

For what its worth, I plan on buying a Barber tone press for my mark iv. It seems to be very reasonable for what you get, and I haven't heard one bad thing about them.
