    Express 5:50, I need a change.

Slightly of topic, but anyway... Why limit yourself to only ONE dirt pedal? I have a small collection, still growing: - Fulltone Full-drive 2 MOSFET - Fulltone OCD version 3 - Fulltone OCD version 4 - Fulltone Catalyst - Fulltone Fat-Boost 3 (can produce some grit) - Boss Metal Core...

Express 5:50 mod; Logarithmic master volume

Cool! I've had similar ideas, that way no modification to the amp is necessary. Might try it out!

    Express 5:50, I need a change.

I was thinking the same about the reverb. It is anything BUT subtle. I like to have just a touch of reverb and is having a hard time dialing in just that. It's really awesome but way too loud IMO. I think you're having a bad V5 tube. I'm thinking of trying a low gain tube there myself, a 12AT7...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

:D You're right. I should have fetched them myself and had a good time while at it. In the mean time I've been fixing my pedalboard and needed some stuff so I used up the funds. Aw, well, there's soon some fresh funds... /Goran

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Update: About the icepick: You guys taught me how to use the tone controls. Since then I've managed to dial in a soft sound of my liking. Thanks for that! My fault was thinking about the tone controls as being ordinary controls with zero at noon. That fooled me into some rather extreme...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Unfortunately not. I'm giving the dealer until Monday, if they do not know when they will be delivered I purchase elsewhere. The "problem" is that I got a good deal... On the other hand; if the can't deliver they can have any deal they want....

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Jupp, you where all right! Tried to relearn my settings at practice last night. The gain/mid/treble settings are powerful stuff. Especially the gain/mid interaction. I manage to tame the ice-pick and getting a tone I like by reducing the mid and increasing the gain a bit. With my new found...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Thanks guys! Lots of good answers. Guess I'll have to wait for my new tubes, and then learn the tone controls. The mid control might be to blame, I have it way past noon. The ice-pick syndrome would be in the upper mid area I suppose. When I got it home I started out with all tone controls at...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Thanks JJ, I'm gonna try it when home this evening. My amp lives on the floor in my man-cave when not giggin'. The floor in my cave is fully protected by a carpet. I place the amps somewhat sideways slanted from the wall and on the wall hangs a "long haired" rug. :D Since the cave doubles as...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

There's so many variables... So many choices, so many opinions... The thing is that I really like the sound and the tone the Express 5:50 produce. It's really awesome. But now and then, especially when diggin' in, the icepick strikes. I would like to tame that, because it's hurts the ears...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

I know you didn't... :D I seldom use the Tele, but it has it's place. Them funky chords for example.

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Yeah, you're right Tubenator. I should of course evaluate the SPAX7's first. If they keep what they promised in the delivery notice I'll probably have them next week. Hopefully... Extension cab, yes... I like the idea. It places the controls in reaching position too. For my other rig I got...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Even strait in to the amp there's an icepick. I have Lace Hot Golds (13.2 k set) in my Strat #1, Fender Hot Noiseless in two different Strats and a Tele with Fender Noiseless pups. I really don't think they're to blame. All of them produce that icepick through the Express but not on other amps...

5:50 ice-pickish. Would a speaker change be the remedie?

Thinking of trying a Celestion Vintage 30. A fairly common mod for the 5:50 of what I've read. Playing mostly Strats my sound gets kinda ice-picky even if I dial in minimum treble on the amp. When reading on the net I've come to the conclusion that the Vintage 30 is more warm sounding than the...

Replacing my Express 6L6 Yellow tubes with Mesa 6L6 Red's...

Now it's done!! The tubes arrived some days later than expected... I now have Mesa STR-440 Red's in my Express 5:50. :D At bedroom level (maybe slightly over, as I have a man-cave in my basement) I detect no difference tone-wise compared to my old Yellows... At least they doesn't rattle...

Does you Express pop when switching power levels?

Of course it pops. You are not supposed to switch that way. The standby is your friend...

Replacing my Express 6L6 Yellow tubes with Mesa 6L6 Red's...

I use my OCD in HP mode most of the time, gain around 11 o'clock and tone 11 o'clock. Volume for unity gain or slightly more It's the version 4 of the OCD I have on my pedal board, for light packing situations I have a version 3 to grab. They are quite different sounding, but you can dial in...

Replacing my Express 6L6 Yellow tubes with Mesa 6L6 Red's...

Interesting... Then Thomann is wrong about their descriptions. Wouldn't be the first time. Last week I played at an outdoor gig using only the clean channel and an OCD pedal in front for hair. Tone heaven IMO. Had to crank up the master volume to about 9 o'clock (maybe 9:15) and it was...
