Should Mesa Have Called it Something Else?

Where does mesa do marketing? I don't think I've ever seen a digital ad anywhere from them. You can't rely on influencers to sell your gear, and guitar magazines aren't anywhere near as heavily read as they used to be. Maybe I'm in the wrong territory (outside the USA and Europe) to not be...

    My Stiletto Ace mods

Alrighty, figured I'd tie this off as I'd lived with the mods for a couple of months but wanted to refine things a bit more: R83 is now a 7k5 and 50k trimpot in series for a bias control. Remove r83 and replace with a resistor and trimpot in series. C13 is 10n/630v. Anything larger value than...

    dual rectifier help please

First things first, try a different cable, clean the sockets, inspect the FX switch itself. Something isn't getting through, could be a relay in the amp (just guessing, I'm not sure what's in there), could be a faulty switch, could be crud on the pins, it could be something trivial or not to...

New Stiletto Ace 1x12 sound issue

It occurs to me it could be the 500pf in the tone stack in series with the treble pot also. It could be whole bunch of things. Bon chance mon ami.

New Stiletto Ace 1x12 sound issue

My supposition is that the connection to ground from the bass or middle pots has come loose, or a 22nf capacitor has failed in the tone stack. There are 2 22nf caps for both the bass and middle controls. Clean out the pots with contact cleaner and electrical lubricant, as well as all the tube...

New Stiletto Ace 1x12 sound issue

That's confusing. Channel 1 works perfectly, but sounds tinny and weak? The mids and bass on channel 2 don't work but it sounds superb? I am at a loss. Hopefully someone else can understand what it is you're trying to say.

    My Stiletto Ace mods

Well, c5 and C3 are treble peakers. Changing that cap will change the EQ that gets amplified from stage to stage. Relay 3 also seems to bring in another bright cap for channel 1. It's normally a 120pf, but the relay brings in another 500pf at c9. That's gonna add a lot of treble. If that's the...

New Stiletto Ace 1x12 sound issue

The tone stacks occur after v3. Check the tube socket on the board as I suspect you've got a loose solder joint. Considering both your mids and bass do nothing and treble grounds the signal id check around the tube at v3 and then check the grounds and connections between the tone stacks. Are...

Need some big help restoring my Tremoverb (strange mods)

Yeah it's not great. Although tbf it has survived tours and gigs without issue (tremolo aside). I removed it and rebuilt it in a nicer way though and siliconed down anything that needs to float. There's a torn up trace below that 47nf there that I needed to circumvent. This is Mesas totally...

Need some big help restoring my Tremoverb (strange mods)

So mesa got in touch with me. They sent me some diagrams of the Tremoverb PCB and where things were going. They were totally wrong and not only contradicted their own schematic but made the amp inoperable and also sent 400v across the phase inverter. They suggested wiring the 10k resistor in...

Need some big help restoring my Tremoverb (strange mods)

I don't think it'll be that bad. It's one pad drilled out, which means 1 trace/net. If I can find where that 1M connects I can reroute it easily enough and then see what that yellow cap is all about, but suspect it can be removed. The amp works great otherwise.

Need some big help restoring my Tremoverb (strange mods)

OK. Some progress (?). I buzzed around and found this: The new cap and the raised side of the 1M are going to pin 3 of V6. The leg on the right of the yellow cap buzzes with all those pins of all those tubes which makes me think it's some sort of ground reference. The other side of the 1M...

Need some big help restoring my Tremoverb (strange mods)

Hi guys, I got my Tverb around 2018. I got it cheap because sometime prior to my ownership it was taken to a tech for a motorboating issue. This tech presumed it was the tremolo circuit and "disconnected" the tremolo. That didn't fix it, the owner was refunded and then took it to another tech...

    Badlander mods?

Sure. V3a is an easy target to lower the 3k3 to a 2k7 or lower, and easily done with a pot clipped in parallel to that resistor, find the setting you like, measure the pot, then install that value in parallel. Easy, and entirely reversible. I'd guesstimate v1 will affect the clean channel as...

Lack of bass en dual rect

Why would anyone put acetone around anything plastic... it literally dissolves (some kinds of) plastic. You don't need any of this. All you need is a blob of blue tack or Power Tack and just dab it on and pull it off. Hell, you could even use masking tape to pick up loose debris. Acetone is...

Rectoverb 50 6L6 tube and speaker discusson.

1- I've got a quad of Russian 6P3S tubes in my tremoverb. 2- I love rectos with a white label t75 (the ones from around '83-'88 or so), but the modern ones are a totally different speaker and sound like anus.

    Badlander mods?

More gain will be simple to achieve, same with more bass. Like I said ages ago, increasing coupling cap value and lowering a cathode resistor will achieve those things with minimal fuss and be entirely reversible, or could even be put on a switch. A schematic for this amp would be great but I...

    Badlander mods?

Changing the 15k to a 39k would reduce the gain, which sounds like it's the opposite of what they're looking to achieve. Have a look at the coupling caps between stages and see if they can be beefed up. That's an easy win for more low end passing through the signal. Maybe the cathode bypass...

    Badlander mods?

I modded the 39k cold clipper on my Stiletto down to a 27k for a smidge more gain and it totally woke up the amp, and also change the 2n2 coupling cap to a 6n8. It's an easy win for more gain and body and a little change goes a very long way for the sake of 1 resistor and/or cap soldered in...
  20. JustPassingThrough

    Badlander mods?

Well that's a start. Making the 15k cold clipper something like 12k or 10k would be an easy 100% reversible mod and increase the gain output. Clipping a 75k resistor in parallel with that 15k would give 12.5k, a 33k in parallel would give 10.3k. since this could just be soldered to the legs of...
