I have never heard of using EL-34s for all 4 power tubes in an older Mark. I know you can go with 4 6L6s, and (with some restrictions) you can use 4 6v6s in a Mark IV. But I don't think you can use 4 EL34s. Hope this helps.

Don't know what the criteria is for having them or not. Both my Mark IV and my Nomad have them.

On the top amp, are the outside tubes EL84s held in with yellow-jackets?

I find that the cleanest tones for channel 1 on my Nomad (a 45 1x12 combo) are when the gain is set below noon, and the channel volume is use to give some volume. Once I start putting the channel gain above noon, it start making a difference in the channel's clarity. Not sure if this helps you...

Mine folds more in a tube shape than a flat shape. It is too long to fit in my Mark IV (a B-series). I don't know how much wider a wide-body Mark IV is.
