Not needed at all. I usually remove the pot and add an adjustable negative feedback or mid boost or something cool......Even a plastic plug in the hole is better than a knob I'll never use....

I think the loop mod is absolutely necessary if you use it. You will be amazed at the amount of signal (effected and not effected) that you are missing. Even with the pot maxed out, there is still some series resistance and some signal going to ground. Try the loop, then do the mod and try it...

It definitely alters the attack of the amp. I don't think it alters the tone much. Without the mod: The amp is extremely punchy and aggressive. Cleans are a little bit too punchy, but the distortion is large and in charge. With the mod: The amp is somewhat more subdued at lower volumes...

Well...... I cleaned the ribbon cable connections. That didn't help. I decided that I was having a stressful day at work so I should change LDR's 16 and 17. I ended up taking the side panel off to reach them. Pucker factor of 11! I installed 2 brand new Vactec VTL5c9 LDR's. Still no Lead 1...

I changed V3. Now I can get sound out of Lead 1 Red, but it is very low output unless I crank the gain and both drives. Then, it just turns to sludgy mud. No articulation, no sustain, just ca-ca sound. I'll swap all of the tubes and see if that helps.
