Randall Smith and Mesa Boogie Parting Ways??

Randall Smith was definitely a pioneer in this industry who gave Mesa Boogie its fame and continued to do so for many decades. If he was fired as the article claims, that is rather harsh and disrespectful in my opinion. People just do not disappear due to retirement without some sort of...

Why Are Mark Vs So Expensive?

Sorry, I downed a pot of coffee before responding. 🤪 It would be difficult to remove the power tube distortion characteristic from a Simul-Class amp as that is in its design. It is still all class AB power. What many call the Class A sockets are what is known as extended class A push-pull...

Using JP2C Preamp with Simul-Class power amp?

High end fizz? What power tubes? The Mark VII is interesting. Similar to the JP but different. It is a bit brighter in character than the JP2C (ok I confess I am running the STR415 Sylvania 6L6GC I got through Mesa, was not easy but I managed to get a NOS quad from them). At least you...

Mark V and VII - high gain mode gain stage questions

Signs of a microphonic preamp tube can vary. Most of the time, they will go into saturation mode or instant feedback if there are any vibrations. Sometimes that needs a signal to excite the tube into feedback. That squeal you cannot control and will not go away until you place the amp into...

Mark V and VII - high gain mode gain stage questions

My apology upfront for the length of my response. If you do not like long responses, put me on ignore so you do not have to read them. If a tube was going microphonic, you can put your finger on it. I generally do not get in the practice of placing my fingers on hot tubes but have done so...

Using JP2C Preamp with Simul-Class power amp?

I did it. Wanted to see if the preamps of the JP2C and Mark VII were on the same level or different. Did this with the FX loops. The only issue if you slave out from the SEND jack, you bypass the GEQ circuits. I would assume the slave out would provide signal for a power amp but that would...

Why Are Mark Vs So Expensive?

I should remain silent but wanted to add my 2 cents to this. The only Mesa amps I am aware of that do not rely on power tube distortion fall into the Rectifier category. Roadster is the prime example. Power tubes with more headroom like the coded red or yellows sound the best with that amp...

Roadster use with 7-string guitar (if you can find the tubes that is)

Just to let you know, f you still have the Roadster, there are two tube locations in the amp you should avoid using Russian tubes. This was noted by Mesa a few years if not longer. They sold two types of Russian preamp tubes, R1 and R2. Not sure what they are exactly. Best to avoid using...

Look what I found! - Any one tried these tubes in The Mark V 90W?

My particular Mark V90 is the Lemon ICE model. It has many issues. Not sure if it could be narrowed down to a specific production date. I have played others of the same year, and they all sounded really good. Just my luck I pulled the trigger and got a row of lemons on the draw. Most of you...

Roadster use with 7-string guitar (if you can find the tubes that is)

V1, V3, V4, V5, V6. Tung Sol 12AX7 in V2 will make the edge mode on CH2 sound really good. Mullard long plate (current production) 12AX7 in V7 for the phase inverter. Some like the Sovtek LPS but the Mullard is the same tube but of better quality. Mesa stock is ok there as well. Best to...

Look what I found! - Any one tried these tubes in The Mark V 90W?

You would know well enough if you have the ice pick issue. The effect would be like taking an ice pick and slamming it into your ear, you need to push it in hard enough to break the bone structure around the ear canal with it. It is not as physical as that but may as well be. It creates a...

Roadster use with 7-string guitar (if you can find the tubes that is)

I have not tried the Beijing tubes in the MWDR yet. Perhaps I will when I decide to bring out the 412 cabs again. That one is a bit different than the Roadster and it seems to prefer the early distortion type power tubes. Colors in the green or grey STR440.

Roadster use with 7-string guitar (if you can find the tubes that is)

Those same tubes in the Mark V, may tighten things up a bit. I actually liked them better in the Mark IVB. Also had good results in the Mark VII too. Badlander as well. Not so lucky with the JP2C, made things sound a bit fizzy but that could have been the STR440 tubes (that is what the JP2C...

Roadster use with 7-string guitar (if you can find the tubes that is)

Those are as well. For best results, some of the Beijing tubes may be on the rich side in the gain. Use the SPAX in V1 on the Roadster. V2, you can use the other one as that will help with the sub-harmonic swamp. These tubes are also good for the cathode follower circuits V3 and V5. What...

Yes sir, those are the Beijing tubes.

I call those tubes unobtanium as they have become difficult to get. Bummer. Was considering getting a few more of them too.

Roadster use with 7-string guitar (if you can find the tubes that is)

I am not sure those are the Beijing 6N4-J Military grade Square foil getter tubes. Shuguang made them back in 1990 in a Beijing facility. There are similar versions but with a halo getter made in some other province. Not the same tubes. I had a few of those (often called silver specials). I...

Sweetwater is showing "new" mesa tubes

I only tried them in a few of my amps to get an idea how they sound. They sounded great in the Badlander. The Triple Crown did not change much in character. I have them on reserve for replacements when the tubes I am using need to be replaced. As for the RA100, did not like them, too similar...

Mark V, best tones I've found for high gain "trick".

I would be curious if a compressor would work in the FX loop. I assume it would have to be line level compliant but may also cut some frequencies out. Probably not a good I ideal. So the compressor/sustainer is not the same thing as a compressor/limiter as you would find for use in a mixdown...

Mark V, best tones I've found for high gain "trick".

I know the ICE is in the preamp. All three channels too. Tweed, Edge, and all voices of CH3. It sounds like breaking glass inside your ear drum. It could be GEQ related, which I believe to be the case. This is what the output looked like on the send jack with a 750Hz sinusoid signal on the...
