OK, so I scored these four NOS Sovtec 5881 WXT's. They look to be manufactured around the mid 80's. I have a pair that I bought around 1986. The only difference I see is that the pair I bought have very short bases compared to the four NOS's. Trying random pairs, I did hear a slight improvement...

I used Sprague 30uf/500's and F&T 220uf/300's in the power supply. The rest of the electrolytics are Nichicon I think. Just so I am clear on the subject of re-capping, both electrolytics and "orange drop" type caps should be replaced on amps of a certain age or older, say + or - ten years old or...

Sorry for taking so long! I thought I posted . The transformers look good. I did a cap job a little over two years ago ( all electrolytics). I think swapping out tubes is a good idea. Also, I hadn't thought about cleaning the pots. They have never been cleaned. Re: Old Caps. Yesterday a friend...

Here's what I have done to the amp so far. As noted earlier I replaced the .005/ 400 Sprague 715P with the same type at .0047/400. (Mouser did not have a .005). The original cap reads OL out of circuit. I also replaced the 680 omh resistor. Also in the area of V4 I replaced a couple 470kohm...

I have improved the response and tone by replacing the out of spec 680 ohm resistor. Also, the amp seems louder. Can someone tell me what this resistor does? thanks DrewV

One end of the cap connects to pin 7 of V4. To the left of the cap is a 1 watt carbon comp resistor valued at 680 ohm. It looks a bit discolored and measures 630 ohm in circuit.

Speakers wouldn't be a problem. Besides the original stock Black Shadow I've got Vintage 30's, Greenbacks andf Vox Blue Bulldogs. Presence control is usually set to 31/2 to 4. I've got two sets of "Mesa Engineering" made in USA 6L6's. The original set and the first replacement set that I bought...

I've got a fairly new set of MB STR454's in the amp right now. It just seems like the "lead drive" channel is not as hot as it used to be. I thought the bias resistors might have gone out of spec and that the 6L6's were running too cold but the resistors read good. Is there a certain grade of...

Hi, I have a 60 watt Mark IIC and a friend has a 60 watt Mark IIB. We both bought our amps new directly from MB. Remembering back thru the fog, our new Boogies exibited amazing touch sensitivity and near infinite sustain even at minimum volumn levels. Over the years we have both noticed that the...

    Power Tube Saturation

Hi All, I have a few questions about tubes, but first, some history...Lately I've been doing some repair work on a 1978 Ampeg V4 head. This amp uses 7027 power tubes. While researching the V4 I learned that the 7027's could be replaced with 6L6 GC's or equivalent. Digging out my small collection...

Filter Cap Replacement - 1984 Mark II C+

pyscodave, Tighter & Brighter!! The improvement in the sound coming out of the amp can only be described as "glorious". When I fired it up I was instantly reminded of the first time I turned the new from the factory amp on (and up ) back in '84, ...better than that new car smell by a mile...

Filter Cap Replacement - 1984 Mark II C+

The cap job was successful! I used the light bulb current limiter for an hour. When I fired the amp up, it sounded as good or better than new (if that's possible). I reccommend to anyone that's got a tube amp 10 or more years old to have it recapped. you won't be disappointed! Boogie On...dv

I need some info on the trany thats inside my Mesa MK IIC+.

I'm no authoratoratay...However.... All tranformers, like guitar pick-ups, are not created equal. Every guitarist knows there is a difference between cheaply made pick-ups and custom DiMarzio's. High-end preamp builders are very particular about the transformers they use, because the quality of...

The above quote refers to operations pre 1980. In 1980 Randall moved operations out of his house and into a small Petaluma,Ca complex. It is not stated if or when he stopped making his own custom transformers.

I need some info on the trany thats inside my Mesa MK IIC+.

According to the May 1983 issue of Guitar Player Magazine, page 16: " The final step in the process came when Randall decided that it made little sense to keep buying Fender Princetons to disassamble and so he started fabricating the Boogies entirely from scratch- including the chassis...
