    newbie question

IMO, the choice of amp is almost solely due to the voicing and has very little to do with power. I use 100 W, 50 W, and 7 W amps at my home for low and high volume without a problem. I think you'll find that you will clearly prefer one type of output tube over the other (EL-84s vs. 6L6), and...

    newbie question

EL-84s are less powerful, crunchier, and have a chimey top end compared to 6L6. Generally, EL-84s are rated for about 7-12 W per tube, where 6L6s are rated for 25 W per tube. In comparison, the EL-84 sounds more British than the 6L6, which is more American. Lots of Fenders used the 6L6 (Twin)...

    An F-50 combo or Rectoverb

Good post! I agree in general, but my F-100 and Tremoverb have the same amount of gain capability, which is a whole lot. The Express 5:50 is interesting...

    F-50 loop Q's

The mix is completely passive, so there is nothing wrong with running it up to 90%. I keep mine at max with my G-Major and I can get better low volume performance that way, than with the channel masters. You can also do this for low volume if you're not using the loop:

Anyone have pricing info on the Express?

Yeah, there are lots of amps where I have the same problem. :) Like I said though if the tone is there, I'd be willing to part with my custom F-100 2x12 combo.

Anyone have pricing info on the Express?

I suppose it depends on what you're used to. :) For Mesa, and the features on the Express, these prices are more than fair IMO. If the tone is there just like my F-100 2x12 combo, I can easily see the switch happening to an Express 5:50 head.

    Mesa Jute Grill?

You're welcome. You can read all about the mod I did here: http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1182222 I bought the knobs from www.samash.com and they were $17 for a pack of six. Since the Mesa F-series uses knobs exactly like the old Fender Vibrolux and new...

    Mesa Jute Grill?

I'm pretty sure this is the same as Mesa's Tan Jute: http://www.mojomusicalsupply.com/item.asp?pid=61681&pg=44986&id=6000009 This is my F-100 with Mesa Tan Jute:

    Line out with a F-50

Well, the F-series is no different from any other tube amp. You don't have to mic the amp at a small gig, but if you want people to hear you across the sound stage, micing is the only way. An SM-57 properly placed near the amp's speakers, then direct to the board is the de facto standard for...

    Line out with a F-50

I've always miced my F-100 at gigs and it sounds really good as long as the sound man knows what he's doing. The recording output is pretty blah as far as I'm concerned for overdriven sounds. It sounds okay for clean stuff.

Redoing the grill cloth on 4x12 Recto Slant Cab

Your grill will be attached from the inside, so disassembly will be different, but shouldn't be too difficult. From there on though, changing your grill should be roughly the same as changing mine. BTW, measure your existing grill to see how big it is. You should be able to get away with a...

preamps section for the F-series the same?

Yup, I have thought of running a direct box with cab sim, but I don't have an XLR interface for my Behringer Ultra-G. However, I have Line6 UX2 Toneport on the way that will give me a ton of interface options so I'll be able to test the direct Ultra-G tone. I'll also get back the same kind of...

Which Mesa head/comb has the best clean and great overdrive?

Have a look at the F-50 and Rectoverb. IMO, the F-series has the best cleans Mesa offers (yes, including the Lone Star) and the overdrive is much better for Tool tones. The Rectoverb's clean is good, and has than Recto crunch if that's your thing. They're both about the same price used as a...

preamps section for the F-series the same?

You will get the same sound using the recording output because it's taken right before the phase inverter, just after the FX loop. Thanks for the mention Benny. I like the clips too, but they aren't exactly direct from the amp. :) Here are a few recent clips all recorded as above...

Redoing the grill cloth on 4x12 Recto Slant Cab

Follow my tutorial and the one that's referenced in the thread, and you should have plenty of info to get you through the conversion. Good luck! :) http://acapella.harmony-central.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1182222

    Tremoverb Ohm Question

Mostly, the output tubes will burn out faster. In lesser amps the Output Transformer can also be at risk, but for Mesa, the manual even states a single step mismatch (e.g. 4 -> 8, 8 -> 4, etc.) is okay and even encouraged for different tonal possibilities. So, as long as the amp works, I don't...

NEW! (to me anyway) Mesa Tremoverb (Blonde)

Yeah, well, there are lots of ways to run FX devices and consequently lot of ways to hose the tone at the same time. Stomp boxes have a harder time dealing with the impedance and level of the Mesa loop, but with the XTL's input pad, you shouldn't have a problem at all. Also, there are quite a...

I have two problems with my new Tremoverb head....

According the schematic I have, the tremolo is SS using a 555 timer. So, I'm betting that the tubes probably won't have an affect. :) I didn't buy my T-verb for the T, but it's usable on the clean channel for a little variation. I'm not a tremolo fan really.

F Series Mix Pot Master Volume

The Mix Pot Master only affects the preamp, so you're not going to be driving the power amp any harder (less actually). However, there is merit to the change. Basically, the F-series sounds better with the channel 2 master over 9:00. As you may have found, that's really loud. So, the Mix pot...

    ROV vs. F50

Well, I have a Tremoverb and an F-100, so I might be able to help. :) I think the reverb on both the F-series and Rectoverb is roughly the same, with a little more level available on the F-series. You'd really have to move into the Lone Star to get deep, lush 'verb. As for cleans, the F-50 is...
