Hey Fizzle - I had the same issue when I first got my Lonestar and thought something was wrong. I ended up sending audio clips to Mesa and they also told me this was normal.

Sorry, Can't help you out. My Mark iii is at boogie now for a general service, recap and also getting the R2 mod. When I get it back I will tell you if I wish I would have done something else.

I just sent my Mark iii in for some repairs and maintence a couple of weeks ago. Before I sent it they provided an initial estimate but gave the disclaimer "as long as someone hasn't made alot of changes to it". I wonder if they were referencing yours as an example or if this happens...

Justice - The volume fade / drop out happens after about 1hr of playing. I replaced the preamp and power amp tubes just to make sure that wasn't the problem. I can prevent the problem by putting a patch cable in the effects loop. I think the effects loop has caused this same thing for others...

Looks like I need to return my Mark III Head (black dot) for a refund this Thursday to the guitar store. Hopefully I will be able to buy that one again after it is repaired. I will be starting my search again for a Mark III (or maybe Mark IV). I hope I have better luck this time.

I think channel 2 is excellent for a creamy lead, I just use an OD pedal w/ almost no gain, a slight volume boost and then adjust the tone to get the required sound. I generally use other amps for distorted rhythm though.

I am not sure how much use these tubes have. I switched the outer and inner tubes and put it in class A and this doesn't help with the volume cutting in and out. I am pretty sure this isn't a power tube issue. When the volume does come back the tone isn't very good. I will try swapping out...
