    Clean tone with Blues channel

my settings are through a 550 ... my guitar volume is about 5. the reduced output of the guitar doesn't push the compression much but it does give variable fattness and some grit to the tone. my "clean" tone is just shy of a hint before a nudge of break-up ...

    Clean tone with Blues channel

ooops ... contour 11:30 to 1 if i go to high on the contour the sound takes on a "brittle" quality. If i take the middle up to 10 then i'll cut a bit by raising the contour. cb

    Clean tone with Blues channel

hi all, i know that many of us use the blues channel for a clean tone. while the real clean channel sounds good, i think the clean blues channel (@ 12 o'clock, guitar volume rolled back) gives a bit more spice. my settings are ... strat into modified Boss compressor (all controls @12) G: 12...

    ... another effect loop question.

hello all has anybody had any problems running stomp boxes in the effects loop? specifically, has anybody had not been able to use a stompbox because the effect loop signal resulted in the clipping in the stompbox when the amp gets cranked? thanks cb

8 ohm dummy resistor on output

    * what i have done: I wired up a simple resistance (8 ohm 80 watts ... 4-8 ohm, 20 watt radio shack resistors ... series/parallel) as a means of "halfing" the output. I use the two "4-ohm" outputs, one out to speakers, one output to the resistance. * my question: has any one else done this...

Correct way to dial in Express

I have found that I need to be patient before I adjust settings. When a tube amp is initially turned on its components are at room temperature. Tube amps need to be warmed through and through before all the voltages are right. (Temperature affects resistance and therefore voltage.) I try to...

    Mesa Speaker Comparison 10"

Hi Firstly, I tried a Weber Alnico 10 inch 30 watt (his take on the p10q) in a 5:25 ... did not like it. Secondly, placed the Weber in a Superchamp XD and there was the same quality of sound that I did not like in the firstly. So my comments are rather inconclusive concerning the efficacy...

    Anyone add 2" casters to a 5:50?

Hi All I bought a "fold up" hand truck at Costco, I move my 550 around quite easily with it. It folds flat and extends for height. It's light and tucks out of the way easily. I've had casters on amps and I prefer this handtruck for moving the 550 around.

    Line 6 M9

Hi All, I know that it is officially called "double posting" but I posted this question in the "Modern AMP: Express" section too ... I own an Express 5:50. I am looking into multi-effects units and like the simplicity of the Line6 M9. However ... I would like to place the M9 in the loop...

    Line 6 M9 question

Hi All, I own a 5:50 really happy with it. I am looking into multi-effects units and like the simplicity of the Line6 M9. However ... I would like to place the M9 in the loop. I really really wish that they would include a port that would allow channel switching in the amp (ala Boss GT#)...

    5/50 = bassman?

Hi All I have a question about the 5/50. How close to a "Bassman" tone can it get? I know that if I'm looking for a Bassman tone I should get a Bassman ... BUT ... the build quality of Fender amps bugs me (specifically the direct connection of pots and jacks to the circuit board). For what...

    Mesa Boogie DC-3

I think what the defining issue should be is "does this power amp configuration preserve the 2nd harmonic?" Its my understanding that the ability to include (or more correctly "not cancel") the 2nd harmonic in the output is what makes the class A sound so desirable. Does the Maverick power amp...

    Mesa Boogie DC-3

I have another question about the DC 3 power amp section ... why 4 EL 84's? All the other 30 watt boogies use 2 EL 84's and a bit of "dyna watt" circuitry. I understand that the DC 3 is a 35 watt amp ... so each tube is contributing about 9 watts. The Maverick power amp also uses 4 EL 84's as...
