Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

Today, I tried swapping the MC-90 speaker in the Dead Room Iso cabinet with a Vintage 30. No real progress there, but the frequency of the overtone changed. :-) Interesting to me, probably to nobody else. With either speaker I can get the overtone to go away if I turn the volume down--it...

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

No joy. The amp goes to the shop. Thanks to everyone who replied. I tried all suggestions, nothing changed. :-( EDIT: I'll qualify "...nothing changed". The white/static noise on the loop is gone, but the overtone remains. R2 has never sounded better--extremely tight and aggressive...

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

Thanks for the suggestions! My new tubes arrived yesterday but I haven't had time to really go at it, yet--that won't happen until tomorrow or Tuesday. I'll be certain to do as suggested. Here's the tube lineup, from Doug's Tubes: Winged =C= 6L6 and EL34 V1 - Tung-Sol reissue 12AX7 V2 -...

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

Thanks. I tried my 5150 cabinet and no problem. Then, I tried my 5150 into the cabinet I normally use with the Mark IV -- a Grendel Sound Dead Room loaded with a Mesa MC-90, no problem. Back to the normal setup, harmonic problem reappears. I can switch out the speaker to an English made...

Mind if I ask which tube? Thanks! Scott

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

Thanks! I missed that. The one in Highland is less than 6 miles away! Scott

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

I know it's not the guitars. I sent my BFR back to EBMM with this specific complaint. Since, I've used other guitars and it's there with them--brand new strings, pups properly adjusted, too. I'm pretty sure this is the amp, as well as the other problem because neither problem happens on any...

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

That's exactly what I'm saying. The noise is there with effects in the loop and nothing in the loop--cables unplugged. It is there only when the loop is switched on. Tweaking... yep. I've got it at a minimum and it's still too much. Scott

Mark IVa Noise in R2 and Lead

Hi, I've got a 1990 Mark IVa that has what sounds to be white noise at varying levels in the R2 and Lead channels. I've isolated it to the effects loop. It doesn't matter if an effect is in the loop or not; if the loop is engaged, the noise is there. Dunno what is causing it. I have the...

Problems with delay in Mark IV loop

I had the same problem. I hate to say it, but there was no way to get it clean. I believe the Mark IV simply puts out too much signal in the loop for the some DD-3's to handle. I retired my DD-3 and got a Nova Delay. No problems with breakup and distortion there, but pick attack is still...

    Mark IV LED colors

Yes, and on JP's site, too. Simply a stunning guitar and your playing is stellar, as well! Scott

    Mark IV LED colors

Looks like JP has a one-off, or it could be because of a mod... On the Gear Page of his site, if you enhance contrast, brightness, gamma of the Mark IV pictures, R1 LED's are green. :-) I knew when I saw the green R1 lights that they didn't look right to me. Thanks for the replies, guys...

    Mark IV LED colors

Yep.. Filmore... Right up front. And, I agree; I can get the exact same tone with my Mark IV and a V30... of course, I'm also using a JP6 BFR. Because of the single speaker setup I have, I'm playing through an MC-90 in a Grendel Dead Room cabinet and mic'd with an SM57. Scott

    Mark IV LED colors

Okay, thanks... I asked because--and I guess a bit nerdy--I was paying attention to Petrucci's cleans during the show. He said in his Mesa video that he relied on the Lonestar for cleans but in this show, only on a couple of songs did he use the Lonestar for cleans. I could tell because Lead...

    Mark IV LED colors

Sorry... they were the two amps on top. :-) Both Mark IV's. I was close enough to see the settings in the right light, read the pedalboard, and **** near push the easy button. :-) Scott

    Mark IV LED colors

This rather a trivial question, but it's something I have to ask... What color is the newer Mark IV's Rhy1 led? I'm asking because I saw Dream Theater last night and Petrucci's appeared to be green. On my Mark IVa, it's yellow. Scott

    Chorus - Digital Vs Analogue

I like my Boss CE-2... I've never heard one to beat it and that includes the original CE-1. Actually, I think something being digital or analog doesn't really matter as long as you like the sound it produces. Scott

Boss DD-3 Delay and Mark IVa

That's good to know. Thanks for taking the time to respond! Scott

Boss DD-3 Delay and Mark IVa

I don't know. My input chain is buffered, but that's just to match the load on the guitar's pickups. I didn't buffer the effects loop because I honestly don't know if that would help anything but it's a good idea. Oh, and positioning in the loop didn't affect the DD-3 crappiness. :-) Scott
