I'm not sure how one goes about measuring the "matchness" of a pair of tubes, but I bought a dozen "matched" tubes from this company.
My brother plays through an early nineties vintage Mesa 400+ bass amp. It hadn't ever been completely retubed (2 pairs replaced in its lifetime, as I recall), as...
I agree with all these folks. Mesa tone controls actually do something. They really seem to change the character of the sound. I've played through some recent Marshall offerings and the tone controls leave me cold--shave off a little mid here, boost a little bass there--nothing special.
The...
Just messin around, jbird. The advice about the manual was spot-on of course. That's where I started when building my sounds, too. I'm not done yet!
I also use the middle position on my guitar for clean sounds. It's quite different and can yield some nice, somewhat out-of-phase sounds very good...
Great story--reminds of first time I saw a Mesa/Boogie, right around 1984, when I saw this band with a guitarist playing through an amp that looked more like a piece of furniture than an guitar amplifier. It was polished, stained hardwood with a grill cloth that looked like someone stole it from...
seanzilla:
Your Solo 50 should be plenty loud--but high settings on the Master and Output controls (higher than 11:00, perhaps?) will lead to more output tube distortion, which won't help you.
I play in a 5-piece band, and we play LOUD. I don't have to turn my master or output above 11:00, but...
Traditionally, the LP Standard used to come with 498 Bridge and 490 Neck pickups. Lately, though, Gibson seems to have embroiled itself in "pickup wars," and now offer 500s, 496s, Burstbuckers, '57s, etc, etc, etc...
Check out...
I used EMGs for a long time--kinda bright, but in a Les Paul, they really work for a wide variety of music, and I did not find them overly "hot."
Battery changing finally wore me out, so now I've got an Evolution Bridge and SD Neck. I find the Evolution pretty good when overdriven, and a bit...
I would have thought it was silly, but after going through some of the posts on this board, I'm starting to change my mind. It seems some players use stomp boxes for extra overdrive.
Personally, I get plenty of OD with passive pickups, but if it works for them, I've got no problem with it.
How, exactly, do you come to know what monkey balls sound like? :)
I don't know much about the Boss pedal, but it's not cheap...keep fooling with it--I'll bet there's some good stuff in there. Perhaps playing with the wet/dry signal mix?
I have seen two SM-57s fail due to breaks in the transformer winding. Unusual, but it can happen! You won't wear one out using it only on guitar cabs, but regular use for vocals can do some damage to the diaphragm over the long-term. Still, "bulletproof" is fair; maybe not "musicianproof!"

Strange that they wouldn't employ a switching jack for this mod. What could it cost? $3.00 plus 5 minutes to pop in the jack and solder it in?
Is there any sonic reason why they wouldn't use the correct jack?
OneMoreAugust--this is a perfect example of when a series loop is necessary. There seems to be some conflicting info on this board about the difference between parallel and series loops. The concept is simple to anyone who's used a mixing board. Series="Insert," Parallel = "Send."
Series is...
Well, I looked at some past posts for pickup suggestions, and just like with amplifiers, the opinions are all over the map. We all have a sound in our heads, I guess. If our current rig doesn't meet that ideal, we're all likely to look elsewhere.
I'm going to try the Seymour Duncans! What the...
Good question..I don't know! I haven't followed the evolution of the rectifiers very closely. Do you prefer the Dual Series 1 in both tube and silicon modes?
I remember reading that some folks preferred the sound of the Series 2 Single over the Series 1, but I thought that the biggest...
Well, if no one has tried these bad boys, it smells like ONE of us will have to take the plunge and save the good name of the single rectifier!
I'll go shopping this weekend. I've got plenty of gigs coming up to give the SD pups a proper wringing out. More on this later!
In the meantime, let's...
I've used EMGs in the past. I liked them very much, but got very tired of doing the 9 volt mambo. I switched to DiMarzios, which I've discovered I'm not crazy about in my guitar. The Evolution bridge is OK, but the Super Distortion neck is not what I'm looking for. It's pretty good in a clean...
Priceless..the Victor Frankenstein of ROV owners!
Has anyone noticed a crackle in the reverb when using "Pushed?" It's not loud, but noticeable. Changing the preamp tube made no difference.
