V-Twin Rackmount: OpAmp & clipping diodes for Solo chann

I'm pretty sure that the OD modes on the V-twin rack is opamp/ diode clipping same as in the pedal. The 12AX7 is there to just 'colour' the lead tones a little, as I understand it. Never used a pedal so I can't really compare sounds. I was really impressed with the cleans on the V-twin rack. I...

V-Twin Rack; changing from 110V to 240V, switching question

Interesting.... I wonder if yours is using a different type of power supply to mine. Might explain all those modded components on the main board. If its working ok I wouldn't worry too much! If the 110V to 220V conversion you did hadn't worked properly then the transformer would have exploded by...

V-Twin Rack; changing from 110V to 240V, switching question

It was either 15VAC or 18VAC... Pretty sure it was 15VAC, tho. The valves use a heater voltage of 6.3Vdc which makes the glowing but it's not very obvious in the V-twin. I think there are even red LEDs behind the tubes to make them look pretty!! There's no HT voltage from the PSU board for the...

V-Twin Rack; changing from 110V to 240V, switching question

yeah... I think I remember something like that on mine, too. I've since sold my v-twin (big mistake) so I can't have a look for you. Mine worked fine after conversion. No noise or switching probs or anything- not sure what the writing and dodgy jumpers and resistors was all about. Basically...

    a failing 2:fifty channel

First off: try swapping all the channel-A tubes (pre and power) with the channel-B tubes and vice-versa. If the fault follows to chan-B, you can then narrow it down a bit by swapping more tubes. PLEASE be careful around the plate voltage filter caps!! Sound fizzing in and out intermittently...

Quad: Is the Rhythm 2 mode actually "Clean"?

...also, do you find that the Lead-2 Volume does nothing to increase the volume above 3 on the control? The overall volume is loud enough but doesn't get any louder above about 3. There's a possibility it could be an F'd pot... (virtually everything else was!)

Quad: Is the Rhythm 2 mode actually "Clean"?

Cool idea! I didn't think of doing that yet but I've only had my Quad a few weeks - and most of that time I've been rebuilding it! Just starting to get the hang of it right now. What are you using for a boost pedal: a Keeley DS1? I'd sure like to see some settings too...

For those who want to try new tubes in their Studio Pre...

I've had TWO plate resistors blow open circuit in my Quad recently (could be a similar make to the resistors that are used in the Studio)... First the 100k to V12B that killed all channel 1 dead and then 82k into V23A killing lead-1 and I hadn't been swapping or mixing any tubes at the time...

    Replacing pots

ok, should be pretty much a straight swap. The two tags on the back of the old pot should correspond to the two tags on the front of the new pot. My only concern is that the yellow wire on the back of the old pot is long enough to reach the tag on the front of the new pot. I haven't got my Quad...

    Replacing pots

ooooh-kayyyy.... do you have the part number they gave you for the pot? I could look it up on the net and see if I can find a data sheet on it so I can know for definite which tag is what...

    Replacing pots

looks fine to me... I would hope that the place you got it from has supplied a pot with the correct resistance and log/lin type. Did you specify that it was for a Quad? The switch wires look as if they need to go to the two front terminals. The three tags at the back will be the track and wiper...

    50/50 fron 220V to 110V

......oh, and you'll possibly need to replace the fan too. Think that's it.

    50/50 fron 220V to 110V

Looking at the schematic:- http://www.tubefreak.com/50502.gif your fifty/fifty looks like it will be fitted with the export version transformer so it will only work with 220/240V. Your best bet will be to get on to Boogie and see if they can supply a replacement US transformer. You'll also...

    Mesa Quad Re-cap ??

Just in the process of servicing my Quad this week... I ordered four new 30uF 500V, two new 220uF 350V and two new 220uF 63V caps made by F&T in Germany, not the original Mesa and Sprague type caps that were in there but the F&Ts are supposed to be sweet (and they're not cheap). I'll let you...

    Lead 1 given up completely

My Quad Lead 1 channel has been flakey for a while: sometimes it goes quiet and brittle sounding after a few minutes of playing- sometimes it disappears completely only to return a few minutes later sounding just fine. Tried changing the V23 tube:- no difference. Last night (mid-gig) it gave up...

    Formula Pre problems, thoughts?

My Formula is due for a re-tube soon, too... I'll let you know if I have any similar issues....

    Formula Preamp questions

I modded my Formula last year and I'm now 'reasonably' happy with it. As mentioned, the cleans and crunch sound great but the lead still isn't quite there even with the mod. The modded lead is a definite improvement IMO but the tone is still more like a heavy crunch rather than a searing...

    Formula Pre problems, thoughts?

Could you see if all the tubes were glowing properly? Just wondering if it could be a heater circuit problem... New set of tubes with lower heater series impedance could have stressed the circuit somewhere. Similar thing happened to my power amp after a tube change.

V-Twin Rack; changing from 110V to 240V, switching question

nice one. That auction had finished before I got a chance to see it but looked like a sweet buy with footswtich and all. You're getting a seriously good deal for your Euro against the dollar at the moment too! I found that without the Andrew Mod, too much gain on the Lead channel can make the...
