I'd almost rule out a valve problem just based on the fact that when you wiggle to cable in the jack, it gets better. The noise could be as simple as the input jack dirty, or a bad connection somewhere. You could try some electrical contact type cleaner, and check to see if you can otherwise...

I think those would be the same as my old diesel 2x10, Electro-voice. Look inside the back and see if there's numbers stamped on the speaker magnets, such as "1810-2596". Those are EVs.

Thanks again for the reply. I have assembled it and tested it again, and it does seem to be working. I cranked the treble on my amp and you can hear the "hiss" get louder as the knob on the cab is turned. It is true that I really don't need to use it, but I was curious if it was working or...
