Thanks for all the replies, I have been experimenting with pre amp valves and also replaced the stock speaker with an Eminence legend 1058 which has helped. Biggest difference though came when I hooked the amp up to a 1 x 12" extension cab which had a fairly basic Celestion type (70/80) speaker...

Yeah, the manual states that the 8 ohm should be used for the internal speaker or connected to a 4 x 12, the 4 was to be used with a 2 x 12, Boogie seemed to think that all speakers were 8 ohms back then! Really isn't very clear at all. I don't think that running an 8ohm speaker from the 4...

Good choice, I've owned both and currently have a studio 22 but the 44 was a great platform and had the edge on volume/clarity, if I had found another 44 I could afford first I would probably have gone for that.
