Background Noise at Idle, MK I RI

I'm getting my beloved 1990 MK I RI ready to sell and I want it in tip-top shape for it's new owner. I plugged it in today and I noticed a lot of background noise. Kind of a hiss that gets louder and softer. I don't notice it when I play, but I want to have it as quiet as I can. I have...

FS: Mesa MK I RI Hardwood

Unleash your inner Santana! '90 Mesa MK I with hardwood cabinet. 100 watts with half power and "Tweed" switch Svetlana (Winged C 6l6's) and selected preamp tubes EVM 12L Speaker Gil Ayrn Mods to improve the reverb, smooth the overdrive and keep the bass from getting "farty" (Simple changes in...

    Carvin Mesa copy

I had an oak Carvin X100 with an EV speaker. (Can you say "boat anchor?") Up until recently a friend was still playing through it. The power section is pretty much a standard 100 watt Boogie/Twin Reverb type, but the Carvin preamp has active EQ and a different overdrive structure. I could never...

    I got me a Studio 22+!!!

I'm not crazy about the stock speaker (I put an Altec Lansing 417-8H in mine) and you might want a lower gain tube in V1 and V2. At the least get the best, warm NOS 12AX7 you can afford and put it in V2. I play my Studio .22+ for about 90% of my gigs. It sounds good with everything from a...

    Mark 1 Combo Reissue

My amp is at my practice space, so I can't give you the exact settings, but I run the treble at around 5-7, the middle up around 7 and the bass at 3 or lower. For what I'm doing right now, I'm just using input two with a Tube Screamer for my overdrive. I have an EVM-12L speaker in it and it has...

    korg tuner and mesa heads!

Use the Slave Out into the tuner. You don't want a tuner in the loop of an amp. It'll just add noise.

    What Does It Weigh?

Cab, speaker and transformers. I guess it can't be much worse then my hardwood MK I...

Has anyone ordered a Mark V yet?

You guys are bad. I had no, zero, nada, interest in these amps and thought they were a big step in the wrong direction. "Make it simpler," I said. "Too many knobs, I never met a MK IV I liked." Blah, blah, blah. If I sell my Rivera S120-210, Studio .22+, MK I RI and a Carvin Quad Preamp, I...

    What Does It Weigh?

Give me the worst case. Hardwood combo with EV-type speaker (What speaker are they using anyway?). How much does it weigh?

    Mark 1 Reissue question

My MK I RI was giving me problems recently. Weird noises and loss of power, distortion when you play hard, things like that. I replaced the first two preamp tubes and it's now quiet and sounding sweet. Tubes are somewhat cheap and easy to replace. Start with the preamp tubes.

    transporting a mark 1 combo

I don't think the amp cares as long as it isn't getting thrown around or bumped up against other gear. I put my Studio .22+ on it's back when I use my sweetie's Subaru Outback. In my Caravan, it sits upright with other gear keeping it from sliding around. Of course you need a forklift to load...

    New to me Mark I!

If you have a sound like firewood crackling, it's possibly a preamp tube getting ready to give up the ghost. You might try some know good tubes and see if they make a difference. My MK I RI was making hissy sounds, then it started distorting when I was playing and the volume dropped. Preamp tubes.

Snakes in my MK I RI!

What 12AX7's are you guys using in your Boogies?

Snakes in my MK I RI!

It's OK, they're twineing around my guitar neck now. The patterns in the grain of my hardwood Boogie are especially far out! Wow!

Snakes in my MK I RI!

Well, no actual snakes, but it's making a lot of background noise, hiss and high frequency stuff. It seems to be getting worse. I'm guessing preamp tubes, but what else should I check out? Would filter caps do that? Other then that it's sounding great and has no shortage of power.
