    Is my MKIII Combo overheating?

Does your combo not have a fan built in? Mine has a hardwired one by the speaker, pointing right at the power tubes.

NAD: IIB "300 Series" Coliseum... As a bass amp?

You have to be more careful with bass rigs, because at low frequencies you can blow speakers without even exceeding their power handling. When I put a 5 string bass through my D-180 into two EVM-15Ls, I could hear them starting to fart out on low notes even though they were nominally 400 watts'...

NAD: IIB "300 Series" Coliseum... As a bass amp?

Haha, I'm sorry! I meant to say "I doubt a single EVM-15L will last if you're playing bass through it, unless you're consistently keeping it below medium-loud volumes." The couple times I used just a single 15 at shows (with a comparable Mesa head), I felt like I was pretty close to the edge.

NAD: IIB "300 Series" Coliseum... As a bass amp?

I doubt it, even if it's the higher-wattage version. I had a D-180 (also 180 watts with 6x 6L6 power tubes) and when I ran that through a 1x15 I could see the speaker working pretty hard even before I got it super loud. This was with an EVM-15L, and then later an Eminence Kappalite 3015 in the...

What do you use your Mark II for.

Only half on-topic, but I use a Studio Preamp in a bass rack rig. Driving a 2:90 simulclass power amp, so I guess adding up to something like a supercharged Coliseum?

    EL34s in 2:90 (class A sockets)?

Followup: Mesa tech support says you can do it safely but they don't think it'll sound particularly good because the amp will be running the EL34s colder than they like. Anyone actually try this, or mod a 2:90 so you can tweak the bias to be more EL34-friendly?

    EL34s in 2:90 (class A sockets)?

Has anyone tried running EL34s in the class A sockets of a 2:90 power amp? I was reading that you can supposedly do that, and I can imagine it sounding cool...but I don't have any EL34s on hand and thought I'd ask around before ordering a quad of them.

Mesa Cab Clone VS Studio preamp

I think the Mark 2/Mark 3 family (including the Studio pre) are much better "rock" amps than the rectifiers are. They sound great all over the gain range, from totally clean to overdriven to all-out distortion. Rectos are a high-gain one trick pony by comparison.

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

Played my first show with this (using a pair of 1x15s, because I didn't want to drag a vintage 8x10 to this one). Sounded pretty good, tons of low end for a guitar preamp. At this point I have the outputs on 5, power amp volumes halfway, presences zeroed, and just use the master to set my...

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

Power amp arrived last night, sounded good at home testing volumes. I still need to make a couple of shorting plugs and bring the whole thing down to the practice space though. And, of course, re-wire my 8x10 in stereo so I can use both power sections. It never ends.

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

No kidding?! I was thinking there must be some obvious solution I was missing since it seemed like Mesa had thought of every other possible option for that power amp. Definitely going to need all 180 watts for a bass rig, I guess I'll build a splitter cable if I need to use the effects send...

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

I also just realized that on a SP or Mark 3 the lead "channel" (i.e. boost and master) comes before the rhythm volume, not after as the tube and knob layout had led me to believe.

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

I've seen a lot of people say that. How do you connect a 2:90 so that it runs both sides off the same mono signal? This seems like a super obvious thing but there's nothing in the manual and I can't see a switch or easy way to jumper the input jacks.

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

This was my instinct. What do you do with the SP's "output level" knobs? Glancing at the tube chart it looks like they're V4, so I guess an actual gain stage and not just another passive master volume...

First steps into Studio Pre + 2:90 rig

Awesome, thanks! I played with it more seriously today in the practice space. The volume/gain thing is so weird compared to the Mark 3s! It kind of seems like: With a Mark 3 if you set the rhythm channel to overdrive, you can hear it start to make the lead channel a bit fuzzy, loose, eventually...
