Formula is not hi-gain. It has a fair bit of crunch, but I definitely would not call it hi-gain. Formula has a really good clean channel but the lead channals are a little middy. That can be cured by the built in EQ. It took a while to get used to the controls and get a decent sound out of...

If you moved the tubes from one channel to the other and the problem followed the tubes...it is definitely a tube problem. Replace them. If a tube is going the channel will sound weak......sounds exactly like whats going on.

Hmmmm.....I've never used the recording outs. My Formula is strickly a live rig. Something to try when I get a chance though.

I don't keep my rig @ home. Our practice space is about a 30Min drive from my house and I leave my gear there. I have a V-Amp2 at home hooked to my computer for practice. Besides, don't trust sound clips you hear on the web....you have no idea what other gear is being used and it all affects...

20/20 doesn't take EL34 tubes....it uses EL84's. Much smaller tube, considered the smaller brother of the EL34, but other than that they are completely incompatible.

A 20/20 will not take 6L6's without MAJOR modification. EL84's are small tubes that use 9 pin sockets (same as a 12ax7 preamp tube). A 6L6 is an Octal type tube that has a much bigger socket. You also have to consider the operating voltages and heater current which are very different as well...

now that would be something. Fair amount of work though....have to change both OT's, remove the Phase Inverters, run each set of EL84's (2 per side) in parallel.....etc. Could be done. Be a shame to change such a wonderful amp though. I love the 20/20! :)

After double checking, I don't seem to have that problem with mine. As I mentioned earlier, could be tubes. How old is your unit? If old enuff it could just be component wear. Some resistors or caps tiring over time and slightly changing values. Happens to all amps over time.

Interesting.... Did you try swapping the tubes in the channels to see if one set were weaker than the other? Have you tried switching the speakers around to see if one (or set) may be slightly more efficient than the other?

I'd go over the whole amp with a magnifying glass. If it's a heat issue, it's very possible you've got another cold solder joint in there somewhere. It also might be a relay that starts to open up as it gets warm. If it sounds fine when first on and gradually gets lower.....I'm thinking it's...
